Baby Spawn is now seven months old! 7 months! We’ve taken thousands of photos and videos but one of the things we don’t do enough is live-chat with our family who live far. My mom’s disability doesn’t always allow for her to drive several hours to visit Spawn and me.
So I started to look for another way to connect us – the smartphone. Technology is awesome but my mom’s analog cellphone is not. I began to look into a new phone for her and prepaid plans so that we could Skype together (and hopefully get Mom texting!!). She’s on a fixed income; I planned on paying for her phone bill and hoped that a prepaid plan would work out for both of us (and my wallet). It had to be affordable so that I could teach her how to Skype, text and send photos via smartphone. Punchline: I found a plan and a phone.
Introducing T-Mobile Simply Prepaid
For just $40 per month, T-Mobile’s Simply Prepaid plan would give us 4G LTE data with unlimited talk and text. UNLIMITED! My mom could finally hop on T-Mobile’s nationwide 4G LTE network anywhere in the US and check her email, text us pictures, and most importantly, video chat with Baby Spawn! (Key winner for me was the 4G LTE – you know what lag time looks like while Skyping, right?)
Sidenote: I’d always thought prepaid phones and plans were “lower grade.” I thought wrong.
- You don’t have to sign a contract.
- It’s month to month.
- You get a terrific well-known smartphone. BOOM.
I ordered a Samsung Avant smartphone from Walmart.com for $149 and picked it up in their Walmart.com Services area. (My own work phone is over $300 – so this was a bargain!) Then I went to pick out my T-Mobile plan. (My Walmart has their prepaid phone area at the front of the store. Convenient!) A Walmart associate named Angel was so helpful. I explained that I would be paying for two phone bills, and he explained the pros and cons of prepaid plans. In addition, Angel helped me activate my new phone and plan! I was going to do this at home but he wanted to make sure everything checked out. How awesome is that?
After everything was settled and we got our phone activated and working, I had to take a picture with Angel!
We got home and I got started on adding apps and testing out all the features on the Samsung Avant. Skype was added as well as some games and other texting apps for Mom.
I spent some time workhorse-ing this phone and what it and Simply Prepaid had to offer. I even watched “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” on it. (Yes! You can watch my favorite Housewives show through the T-Mobile TV app… with the 4G LTE data speed! w00t!) You can swipe down to find out you exactly how much data you’ve used so you don’t go over your plan!
The unlimited talk and text are my favorite features. I have a HUGE extended family and WE ALL TEXT. Now my mom can be in the game and I can send photos of Spawn immediately to her. I mean, who doesn’t want a photo of Spawn’s chubby thighs?
I’ve since tested Skype with The Wife and texted with friends. My mom is coming out to visit next week and I can’t wait to give this phone to her! I’ll feel much more secure that she’s got a smartphone and Simply Prepaid. Budgetwise, I will only have to pay $40 per month for service for her. Holla!
I can’t wait to connect our three generations!
Did you know prepaid was this affordable? Would you consider switching to prepaid?
Tell me in the comments!

What a great way to stay connected but still stay conscious of your mom’s limited income. This is definitely a great plan to get her on and allow her the conviniences of a smartphone. #client
It’s unlimited talk/text but how much monthly data usage is included in that flat fee?
Okay, I clicked the link and found my answer. My issue is that when I go visit my niece she burns through my data plan. She can go through 1 gb every 15 minutes!
Wow — I had no idea it was so cheap…. I’m assuming iPhones don’t do prepaids…..
ooh girl I’ve been on tmobile pre-paid plan for over a year and love it! Not only is the price right, but I get good service almost every where I go. I think you will be very happy with the plan and it won’t break the bank.
I’ve been on a pre paid plan for years. ..not missing high monthly bills. ..That’s for sure!
