So last week, my pal A shared her story on how she got started with CrossFit. This week, we finish up with how she got started with the paleo diet. I’m quite proud of what’s she’s accomplished in over a year. Working out isn’t just a temporary thing. It’s a lifestyle change where you add it in to your every day (or every other day) life, just like making time to eat breakfast.
Here’s the second part of A’s Journey…
Getting Started with Paleo
What made you think of switching your eating to this ‘diet’?
My personal trainer put me on this diet. The results were dramatic.
Do you believe this should be called a ‘diet’?
Anything is considered a diet — a vegetarian diet, a vegan diet, a paleo diet, a “I eat everything under the sun” diet.
Do you think this will be a permanent thing for you?
It’s a definite part of my permanent diet. Since I do enjoy eating, I do sneak in carbs a few times. I eat low carb by default.
Any books or recipe books you are following or liked? Or websites?
I really like nomnompaleo.com. I also bake a lot of Paleo type cakes and breads — I google recipes. It is challenge to find a good medium for my sweet tooth.

How easy/hard was it for you to follow ‘the rules’?
Agonizing after the first few weeks but you learn not to crave carbs as much as before.
Have you had a cheat meal or snack? What was it?
Always. 🙂 If I like something, I’ll eat it. The difference, it’s the exception rather than the rule.
Is there something that was hard to “give up” because the diet doesn’t allow for it? How did you compensate and have you given it up?
Dairy is very hard for me to give up. Cheese and ice cream. I haven’t given them up. But during a strict paleo challenge, I substitute fruit for the sweetness.
What are your goals/ reasons why you’re doing a paleo or Whole 30 diet?
To lose weight and to avoid being prediabetic. My body doesn’t work well with high carbs. I gain weight as soon as I start indulging in them.
Would you recommend this to anyone?
Most definitely if you’re looking to feel better and to lose weight.

Thanks for sharing! I think Paleo is definitely a bit extreme, but when you have to change the way you eat for medical reasons, there’s no reason to sacrifice taste! Relearning to eat, as I had to do with GD, in an interesting challenge.
