Hey! Happy new year!
Let’s talk about the last quarter of 2017. No blog posts. No self-care. Just work work work. I worked 7-days a week starting in October, and unfortunately, I am still working 7-days a week. In addition to my dayjob, I also worked on my side business and my hobby page. Plus, family life! Things had to be dropped for me to sleep. I was stressed out all-the-time. My personal health and our family life took a big hit; in a nutshell, it was really bad.
This year, “dracarys.”Burn it all down, 2018.
I took an evening to work through my new 2018 PowerSheets workbook, and there was a Game of Thrones marathon on TV. I had the good fortune of landing on one of my favorite episodes of last season – when Daenarys gave no f*cks and burned prisoners and opposing armies. It was ah-ma-zing!
What’s your word of the year? I half joked that “Dracarys” was mine but the more I think about it, the more I like it. Useless friends? Dracarys. Useless busywork? Dracarys. Useless petty conversations? Dracarys. 🔥🔥🔥HAPPY NEW YEAR! 📌📌📌…. . . . . . . . . #dracarys #gameofthrones #burnedout #nomore #momlife #powersheets #cultivatewhatmatters #powersheets #notimeforgames #notimeforpetty #wearetoooldforthis #iamtoooldforthis #dobetter #bebetter #wordoftheyear #oktosayno #focused #progressnotperfection
And suddenly, that was my word for 2018. Dracarys.
Don’t like your current situation? Dracarys. Can’t hang with your useless friends? Dracarys. Don’t like your financial situation? Dracarys. Feeling kind of fat? (Obese, in my case.) Dracarys.
“Dracarys” is giving myself continued permission to let go of situations that don’t work for my life anymore. In other words, GET OUT.
In the past few weeks, I’ve cleared my schedule on one weekend morning to focus on anything other than my dayjob. It could be Rodan + Fields; it could be blogging; it could be building my hobby Facebook Page; it could be window shopping. It didn’t matter as long as I wasn’t working and I was alone (no spouse, no toddler). It’s been great to be able to schedule 1x1s, meetups, and coffee alone. I have blocked all Sunday mornings from now through summer to keep this up. This doesn’t negate the fact that I need to ease up on dayjob work. It also doesn’t cover health and fitness.
Things to focus on this year:
- Buy a damn standing desk. This is a big purchase. I don’t know why I didn’t replace my stupid computer desk when I graduated college. I have been hunched over the same damn computer desk for 20+ years and it has been nothing but problems for my neck, back and wrists. I’ve researched and researched, and it’s time to pony up and give a company my hard-earned dollars. *sniffles* (On the flip side: tax write-off!)
- Drink more water. Since I’ve stopped heading into a corporate office setting, I’ve also lost the muscle memory of walking to get water. This is stupid lame. So I bought a new 32-oz Nalgene water bottle, and I’ve been hitting my water goal every day. You can get extra fancy if you want cold/hot water all the time with a Hydro Flask.
- Read 25 books. Last year I made my goal of 50 books. This year, I know it’s going to slow down because I added a few non-fiction books (ugh), so I cut my goal to 25.
- Stay awake by being limber and healthier. I cannot stay up – mostly because I wake up early but also because I’m so out of shape. So I’d like to get my muscles stronger and feel better about myself. Meal planning is hard but I will try to meal plan my lunches since I work alone.
- Network. Day in and day out, I talk to a wall. Yes, I do have work partners that I chat with all day long. However, there is nothing like localized networking.
- Focus on Rodan + Fields. I have treated my direct sales business like a hobby, and I’ve gotten paid like a hobby. I am in a challenge group that forces me to hit goals every day – it is daunting! But I’m marking stuff off because I cannot afford to be just busy and waste time. I must be productive in the time I am giving myself for this second business. So I choose to work this business. I choose set hours. I choose to not rely on just one income stream. I choose not to rely on social security.
- Watch a movie in an actual movie theater once a month. I have the MoviePass card. I bought it to force myself to leave and take a 2 hour break once a month. This is sounding pretty pathetic – the fact that I have to force myself away from my desk. You see? Dracarys. Burn the desk. Get a standing desk. Stretch and get out.
There are a few other goals but they’re not for public consumption.
What are your goals for 2018? Do you have a word?
