Lunar New Year is February 8 this year. It’s the Year of the Monkey! Monkeys are generally clever, lively, self-assured and honest (whut). They can also be jealous, selfish arrogant and have a temper. If you recall, the Chinese Zodiac consists of 12 animals. If your birth year is 1969, 1981, 1993 or 2005. (They go on and on – look up your birthyear.)
Lunar New Year (or Chinese New Year, as I call it) is celebrated in most Asian countries. It is like Christmas and July 4th all rolled into one. Fireworks and crazy celebrations are thrown in places like Hong Kong and Singapore. In the US, there are celebrations in LA, New York and other major cities with a “Chinatown.” When I was a kid, I was so scared of those firecrackers. I thought they’d burn me alive. Fun times.
For those of you who celebrate this holiday, like me, you best be getting your red envelopes and $1, $5, $10 or $20 (if you’re a baller) bills ready to go. Ever since The Wife and I got married, we’re considered “old” and it’s our turn to give red envelopes filled with cash to the younger generation. (This means our single, child-less relatives – cousins and such.) If you’re like me, you abhor going to the bank, especially with a toddler in tow.
Consider Lunar New Year as one more holiday to wish your family members good fortune…
Celebrate Lunar New Year with a Best Buy Gift Card
Best Buy is helping celebrate the event with an Asian-inspired Giftcard and eGiftcard, available for purchase or gifting from BestBuy.com through February 13th, 2016. You could order your gift cards via online or head to the store to pick up a bunch for your favorite Asian American blogger!
I’ve compiled a list of cool gifts that happen to be gold. You know, because Chinese people love gold. (I can say this because it’s pretty much true. Gold signifies wealth, good fortune. It’s a lucky color, similar to red.) Here are a few choice items…
Beats by Dr. Dre – If there is anything I’d want on my wishlist, it’d be wireless headphones. I have been lifting weights at the gym without any earphones or music, and it is painful. I wish I could un-hear dudes who try to hit on women at my gym while lifting weights. Listen, buddy, they don’t care. They’re busy working out. Plus you smell. These could drown out all their painful come-ons.
Sol Republic – Shadow Wireless Earbud Headphones in Rose Gold – If your giftee isn’t into something that goes on top of their head, there are these Sol Republic wireless earbuds that may work for them. AJ wrote a review of her bluetooth pair (and gave away a pair too!); she is the ultimate headphone junkie. They’re so pretty.
Macbook 12” in Gold (damnnnnn) – Wait, whut. I must have been living under a rock because I didn’t know Apple made gold MacBooks. (Or I’ve been taking care of a toddler and haven’t had time to stare at all things Apple.) This one has 8GB of memory and 256GB flash storage, which makes it lighter than the one I have. If you have a young family member who needs to lighten their load on their back, this could work. Who am I kidding? It will work. They would be so lucky to have you as a relative to gift them a laptop.
Samsung Galaxy S6 – 32GB Phone in Gold (Sprint) – Uh…. buy this and get a free tv?!!! WHUT. (This offer was valid at time of writing; please check details.) I’ll be honest with you, I’d buy the phone for myself and then gift the tv. The Wife would probably reverse the gift. Or you could be the awesome cousin or aunt that gives both the phone and the free tv to your niece or nephew. Dang. A 32” Samsung flatscreen TV? Amazing.
So there you have it.
Gold gifts for the golden kids in your Asian family. Or me.
If these aren’t to your liking, the easiest thing to gift is a gift card, especially one themed to Lunar New Year! Like to shop in your pajamas? Order them online.
And dudes, if you need a Best Buy gift card that’s in Chinese? They have one. (Who else does this? Two thumbs up for being conscious of other cultures, Best Buy.) This one is available all year because it’s an e-gift card! (Go here and then scroll through to find the Chinese one.)
In any case, happy early Lunar New Year to you! See you on the flip side of the Monkey!
