This past weekend, I had the opportunity to speak about blogger ethics and social media at the third annual Latina Lifestyle Bloggers Conference (aka. #LALLBLOG13). Ana-Lydia Ochoa (Latina Lifestyle Bloggers Collective founder) and Carolyn West (So Cal Lady Bloggers co-founder) managed to pull off an amazing two-day conference with sponsors such as Coba, Cover Girl (Fleishman Hillard), Latino Fashion Week, Fresh Brothers, and Alegria Magazine.

My fellow panelists were Lee Reyes-Fournier, the co-founder of Couple Dumb, and Stephanie O’Dea, “The Crockpot Lady,” and our dynamic moderator was Vicky Ayala, digital strategist and entrepreneur. I hope that our panel was useful for the attendees. I apologize for dropping so many F-bombs during my panel. I’m very passionate (heh) about verifying regulations and guidelines. My past experience as a senior social media manager for a regulated industry drilled that into me.

The main points I wanted attendees to take back were these:

  1. FTC disclosure update – this is a PDF and you should read the whole thing
  2. A simple disclosure like “Company X sent me this for review; here’s what I think” is OK per the FTC.
  3. I have not seen any language from the FTC that requires a blogger to disclose above the fold. I believe that as long as it is within the post and it is clear, you are good to go. Contact the FTC if you have questions. Get back to me if you find out otherwise.

The panel before mine featured my fellow colleague, AJ Feuerman, Lisa Rocha (Ilaments), and Jose Resendez who manages the Cover Girl account at Fleishman Hillard. The panel was moderated by super blogger (and all-around nice person, for real) Marie Denee (The Curvy Fashionista). This panel discussed how to work with brands and what not to do (don’t stalk). There was a ton of info thrown out but the main takeaway I got from it is that bloggers STILL hide their email address. If you want a brand to work with you, make it easy for them to find you. Put your email address in a place that’s easy to find on your blog.

Sponsor Coba impressed me. Hello, HORCHATA IN A BOTTLE!!

The team at Juan’s Restaurante brought in tamales and mole. Hi, my name is Chris Lam and one of my favorite foods is TAMALES! I love you, Juan’s Restaurante. I don’t have a photo of my plate since I scarfed it down. I sense a visit to his restaurant in the near future.

We ended the day with Blue Print juices. Blue Print is another cold-pressed juice company that has made an impression on me. They exhibited at the Natural Products Expo this year, and I thought their juices were tasty. I also sense another juice cleanse in the near future.

Thanks for all you techies who retweeted my tweet. It became a Top Tweet on Saturday! I think it was retweeted 12 times!

I missed the first day of the conference because I was at the NAWBO-LA annual luncheon where LL COOL J was there! But, Along Comes Mary has a great first day recap. Go read it!

Thank you, attendees, sponsors, colleagues, and of course Ana-Lydia and Carolyn for inviting me to speak and share resources with you. I look forward to connecting with you offline as well!

Disclosure: I was invited to speak at this conference; my attendance fee and parking was comp’d by the organizers.

WIRI: End of Year Updates 2012

let me file it under fuck it

Well, it’s been a crazy year. I think I say that every year. Nothing is really normal, right?

I’ve been ignoring this blog for a few weeks. Been really busy at work with entertainment news and stuff related to that. On the flip side, I do have a list of topics that I still have to finish writing about. Namely, Blogalicious, part 2, which should have been written back in September!

Here we go:

  • I’ve been re-reading a book called Zero Sight. I read two romance novels and am embarrassed to write down the titles. They’re not included in my GoodReads list of 52.
  • I realized I’m not really a romance novel kind of person and should try some other genre to ‘branch out.’
  • I quit 24 Hour Fitness. I went there twice in the 11 months I had a membership. 24 Hour Fitness gyms smell like my armpits… all the time. Why don’t they invest in a better air circulation system? I bet they’d get more members with fresher air alone. Better yet, if they’d renovate all their bottom tier gyms, they’d get so much more business.
  • I joined Crunch instead. With The Wife. I’m liking Crunch a lot. There are few people at this location. I love that. (The new year memberships might bump up the attendance for a while, but I’m hoping it won’t.) Best of all, it doesn’t smell. Zumba reminds me that I really can’t dance and have no rhythm. But that’s ok because I’m having a pretty great time.
  • I’ve never watched Les Miserables the musical. I always thought the premise sounded dumb. I loooove musicals, but I wasn’t going to be suckered again like I was with Miss Saigon or Into the Woods. The Wife made me watch Les Mis the movie with him. I really liked it. Touche, Les Mis fans.
  • The SMCLA holiday event was fantastic. We had a super lineup of power bloggers and the largest number of attendees this year. I’ll be active on the Board for another year.
  • I met many more So Cal Lady Bloggers at our holiday event in Pasadena.
  • I still drink a cup a day. Or more.

Let It Reign Hockey at the Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario!

Ontario Reign – source: Fb.com

If you’re like The Wife, you’re suffering from NHL withdrawal. The LA Kings is his life, and this season’s lockout is killing him. (And by association, it kills me. So a big middle finger to you, Bettman and league owners; stop being so greedy.)

Fortunately for us, there is an ECHL team in So Cal – the Ontario Reign.

Warning: Very photo heavy.

Recently, IE ShineOn and the Ontario Visitors Bureau invited me and the So Cal Lady Bloggers community  to take in a hockey game at the Citizens Business Bank Arena (CBB Arena) in Ontario, CA. If you’re not familiar, the ECHL is the AA league of hockey. The Reign are the ECHL minor league team affiliated with the LA Kings. This is different from the Manchester Monarchs (AHL), also affiliated with the Kings. Sometimes you’ll hear that a Manchester player was called up to play on the LA Kings (NHL). Ask me later if you still need clarification.

First we met at Aloft Hotel in Ontario. It’s a little sister property by the W Hotel. This definitely ratchets up the ‘cool’ level for Ontario/Rancho Cucamonga.

My fellow bloggers and I drove over to the CBB Arena – just minutes from the hotel. We met with Sue Oxarart, Marketing Director for the CBB Arena and our tour guide.

Now for some factoids: The CBB Arena can hold 11,000 seats. The Ontario Reign has the record for the highest attendance in the ECHL, at 4,500-7,000 fans in seats. The city of Ontario paid $150MM in CASH MONEY to build the arena. There is a VIP lounge/club area called the San Manuel Club, which is in the process of getting remodeled. There are walls of history all around the arena. The lot where the arena sits used to be the Ontario Motor Speedway. Chevron owned the land and then sold to Ontario.

So Cal Lady Bloggers and Sue Oxarart giving us the history of CBB Arena, AEG, and the Ontario Reign.

The Arena holds 125 ticketed events per year including private events (graduations, meetings, etc). BIEBER played here in 2010. For reference, Staples Center holds 18,000+ for LA Kings games and about 20,000 for concerts. So at 11,000 seats, the CBB Arena definitely makes a mega-concert more intimate.

If you head to the skybox level, you can head to the Sailor Jerry bar before the game starts.

Did you really think I could pass up a photo opp like this?

Or you can head to the double suite that was waiting for us, filled with delicious sammies, hot dogs, Coke (YEAH), popcorn, pretzels, cookies, fruit, and more snacks.

It was Military Night at the game we attended, and the Reign honored a person from each of the armed forces. It was so nice to see the all the players come out to shake hands with all the honorees. They did the honorary puck drop, and then the game was on. The Reign played against the Bakersfield Condors. Spoiler alert (not really): We won 5-2.

CBB Arena – Ontario Reign vs Bakersfield Condors – Let’s go boys!

CBB Arena – Ontario Reign – WIN 5-2 against Bakersfield

While the game was fun and the arena was beautiful, it reminded me that we are missing an NHL season where our KINGS are goddamn Stanley Cup winners. It also reminded me that we have a ton of venues in the southland that works for concerts, shows, sports, and so on. Let’s say Carrie Underwood comes back to town, and the Staples Center is sold out –  I would highly recommend you check the CBB Arena for tickets. (Oh guess what, Carrie Underwood is playing there next March. See how that works?)

The Arena was hella easy to get to – easy to find parking, and easy to get OUT of the parking lot. You could make it a day in the IE – go shopping, eat, and watch a Reign game! If the Ontario Mills isn’t your thing, you could drive up the road to Victoria Gardens in Rancho Cucamonga. It’s an outdoor shopping mall with a movie theater (The Hobbit, anyone?) and a bunch of food options. If you’re tired, well, you now know there’s a chic boutique hotel right down the street from the arena that you can stay in.

As always, I had a great time with my fellow bloggers. My girl AJ won a night at the Aloft Hotel, so check out her blog for her review soon.

Big thanks to Su, founder of IEShineOn, for coordinating this great opportunity, and more thanks to Sue Oxarart and the folks at the CBB Arena, Ontario Reign, and Ontario Convention and Visitors Bureau for hosting us.

The fine print: This outing (game and tour) was hosted. The above is my honest opinion. The pics are all mine. Don’t steal, jackass.

Prepping for Blogher 2012: Meet My Roommate

Have I told you how excited I am to go to BlogHer?! Have I also told you that it’s still expensive because many of us pay our own way? I threw up a post on a couple of Facebook groups and found myself a roommate for my hotel room. And we’re both SoCal Lady Blogger group members. And she lives close by to me locally! And she knows what Porto’s is! Holla!

fearless-formula-feeder-header

Fearless Formula Feeder blog – Love the tagline!

Who I Ran Into yesterday: Meet Suzie, the woman behind Fearless Formula Feeder. She’s a mom. She’s from SoCal. She is cool. She also writes this blog that promotes non-judgement toward moms who formula feed.

When I met Suzie, I was confused about her blog. I didn’t know there was that much #cray around formula feeding, so I did some digging. I’m not a mom. I don’t breastfeed on a regular basis. I can barely drink cow breastmilk anymore. (Asian – lactose intolerant – you know the drill.) I just thought people who didn’t breastfeed probably had a health issue going on. Regardless of what the reason is behind formula feeding, there is mom-shame and guilt for doing so.

Well, shizz. Who gives a flying rat’s ass if the woman next to you is feeding her baby formula or breastmilk? I know there are health benefits to breastfeeding. I’m not that ig’nant – I’m on Twitter. *zing!* [I crack myself up. *zing!* Eggs, ovaries, get it?] I’m pretty sure the formula feeders know it too but people have choices and sometimes people can’t breastfeed or don’t want to.

Suzie will be reading pieces at BlogHer’s Voices of the Year! I encourage you to show up and show your support for all the honorees, winners, and readers.

You have a choice.
