Splashing with Tarte’s New ‘Aqualillies’ Collection for Summer 2013

Summer is getting close and what’s a girl to do when her makeup slides right off? Talk to Tarte! Did you know that the I ‘found out’ about Tarte’s Amazonian clay products through QVC? Yeah, QVC! When I can catch it, I will watch Friday Night Beauty like it’s a movie.  (That’s how I learned about Argan Oil too.) Anyway, I ordered Tarte’s foundation and brush through QVC. That foundation brush is one of the best purchases I’ve ever made.

Recently, the Tarte team invited me to try out their newest collection, inspired by the Aqualillies! Don’t know who the Aqualillies are? They’re probably one of the most famous (if not most famous) water ballet/synchronized swim companies in the country.

If you know me, you know that I have a hard time with finding makeup that doesn’t slide off my face. I’m also a constant sweat-er. I sweat my makeup off like there’s no tomorrow. (What can I say… my sweat glands are X-Men worthy.) So I put on my Amazonian Clay Foundation and the rest of my game face on, and I headed to the Annenberg Beach House in Santa Monica and took a look.

Aqualillies for Tarte – Summer Collection 2013

I met a few new beauty bloggers and got my eyes and lips done by the Tarte makeup team. I didn’t take a picture of my newly lined eyes but Bren of OMGBren fame (hey, girl!) snapped a pic of me getting my new coral lips on.

I warned the makeup artist that all eyeliners bleed on me. She said “Unh, uh. Not this time.” She put TURQUOISE liner on my bottom lid, and IT STAYED ON FOR HOURS. People, do you know what kind of miracle this is? This is like me giving birth to a baby – it’s that kind of miracle. (And I don’t have a baby, so do you see the miracle? I’m barren like the Salton Sea.)

Aqualillies for Tarte – Amazonian clay waterproof eye and cheek palette

The Collection’s packaging is beautiful in turquoise blue and tangerine; I’m a fan – coincidentally, my Speck case matches Tarte’s collection! The big compact is the Amazonian clay waterproof eye and cheek palette. I’m very very very excited to try products that the Aqualillies use – if their makeup doesn’t slide off while doing water ballet, chances are, it shouldn’t slide off my face while working on a client’s social media program. Right?

While I got my makeup did, attendees were served hors d’oeuvres, sweets and drinks (sake, anyone?). Then we were treated to a performance by the Aqualillies!

The Aqualillies in their waterproof Tarte makup!

Best of all, I got to meet them!

I took some video of the Aqualillies and uploaded it to YouTube. But you can play it right here if you want to see their awesomeness.

Major thanks goes to the Tarte Team who generously sent me home with the Aqualillies line as well as Summer 2013 products like the Maracuja Rain Glow body perfector and Self Tanner. I’m pretty stoked to try these products out and use more of Tarte’s Amazonian clay makeup products.

Disclosure: Tarte invited me to this event and sent me home with products. I am not required to write a post but this is an honest recap of my day. Why should I lie when lying gets you nowhere in life?

If you’re in the neighborhood, stop by on Monday, September 24 at Cross Campus in Santa Monica for SMCLA‘s Retail Social Media panel! We’ll be talking to the folks in charge of engaging consumers from Fresh & Easy, Shoedazzle (yes the Kim Kardashian-as-their-spokesperson brand), Attention USA, and Social Spotlight Media. Tickets are only $10 before 9/24; $15 at the door.

I’m on the SMCLA Board, and we work friggin’ hard to put on these events. We’re an all-volunteer Board; and we could use some new blood in our committees if you’d like to volunteer. Ask me anything about Social Media Club or SMCLA!

This event is part of Social Media Week LA@smwla – and it kicks off the week! There are a ton of other programs/sessions during the week so check out their site.

PSA: PPLA Food Fare 2012 – the Ultimate Drive-By

In my past life (and first career), I was a nonprofit donor development pro/fundraiser and worked for PPLA. I also worked Food Fare, as did all my colleagues and fellow volunteers. The giant volunteer-run Guild put on an annual Food Fare, featuring local restaurants and businesses. The first one featured Julia Child doing a cooking demo at the event. The Guild is celebrating its 30th anniversary of Food Fare tomorrow, and if you’ve never been, you should seriously consider attending one of the events. (Sometimes I don’t even think Food Fare needs any press – the event sells itself!) And how appropos – March 8th is also International Women’s Day!

You know how some of you drive to Costco on Sundays to “have lunch” by doing drive-bys at the sample tables? (You know who you are.) This is the ultimate ‘drive-by’ because it’s even better food and you can keep coming back for hours.

In addition to food and drink you can scarf down, you can buy wares from local artisans and small businesses. There will be over 150 vendors to walk through. You can spend several hours just meandering and grazing during the day (or evening) event. AND you can also bid on auction items like a visit to the set of MAD MEN! The event is held at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium, which is funny because the event gets bigger and bigger every year, and I don’t know how the Guild can pack in more and more awesomeness in that space. (I’m starting to think that the Santa Monica Civic is like Hermione’s magic bag – you can store a tent, bathroom, school books, clothes…. )

Food Fare is split into day and evening events – evening, being more popular because there’s wine. Me? I like daytime because there isn’t wine.

Part of the press release (because I’m lazy to re-word a press release):

Some of the participating restaurants include: A.O.C., Ammo, Waterloo and City, Angelini Osteria, Church and State, Salt’s Cure, Drago Central, Clementine, Public Kitchen and Bar, Tavern, Craft and Lucques as well as some of the city’s most popular Food Trucks, including The Border Grill Truck and The Grilled Cheese Truck. Food Fare is an opportunity for food-lovers, Planned Parenthood supporters and the general public to sample the finest food and drink that L.A. has to offer, all in one place. Food Fare will also feature a raffle, wine, online and live auction with items ranging from dream vacations to Paris and Telluride to unique entertainment experiences, plus much more.

This year, PPLA is pleased to announce Suzanne Goin, chef and owner of AOC, Lucques and Tavern as PPLA’s Chef of the Year. “It is truly an honor to be named as Chef of the Year! Planned Parenthood provides an invaluable service to the people of Los Angeles and I am so proud to once again be part of this wonderful event”, said Suzanne Goin.

Since advanced tickets are sold out, you’ve got to pay at the door (or call the office) - tickets are $175 for the day (10:30am – 2:00pm) and $250 for evening (6:30pm – 9:30pm). It’s worth it. Do it once. You won’t regret it. As we ARE talking about Planned Parenthood, plan carefully and wear protection – ie. take a Pepcid and wear stretchy pants or a flowy dress to make room for all that food you’ll be eating.

Have fun!
