Friday Five: 5.25.12

What a week! It’s been nonstop before, during, and after the traditional work day.

Top 5 things to take away…

1. The Kings are going to the Stanley Cup Finals!

2. The Rose Bowl was eerily absent of dog poop last night. Perhaps those newly (to me) installed bag dispensers really do help with the arrogant, too-good-to-pick-up-after-your-dog people who run/walk around the Rose Bowl.

3. Perspective – sometimes it feels like there is constant churn and no forward movement in the day. I’ve got to do more stepping out of the mix and grab a ladder and look from above.

4. Put ebooks on the library waitlist one at a time – I am now stuck with two e-books from the library, having to read them at the same time or rush through one to get to the other by deadline. I could put one of them back on hold. I hate doing that because it just means I’ll have to wait another 4 months for my turn.

5. This fun video by the Staples Center workers. Outside of having to pay the licensing fee for the song or get official permission from music publishers, this is fantastic.

PSĀ  – today is the last day for the Cake Bar giveaway!

TWiP: 9.26 – 10.2.11

This one’s going to be a short one… since we were still in Las Vegas for a family wedding, I didn’t take many pictures that were non-wedding related. And away we go!

9.26.11 – My birthday. Not much happened on that day. We had lunch with the Wife’s sis and hubby at his favorite burger joint, Holsteins, in the Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas. Then we headed home for a quiet night.

9.27.11 – Zippo!

9.28.11 – We had dinner with extended family. I was in the in-laws’ car while the Wife drove his siblings.

9.29.11 – Jimmy Eat World at the Wiltern! If you haven’t seen them live, you need to. Just watch how fast Jim plays guitar. Lucky for us, we were able to score pit passes. I was three deep – a total plus for a shortie like me! I could actually see their faces perfectly!

9.30.11 – My BFFs, the Sugars, gifted me not only an Amazon g/c, they also gifted me a headlamp!! Yeah!! Remember when we went to the Big Island and into the lava tubes, I was so jealous of the family who was with us. The dad had a headlamp, and I thought it was perfect to have while on a tour in total darkness. Then we were in the Bay Area, walking in the dark, trying to avoid dog poo that pet owners ignored to scoop. A headlamp would have been perfect. So voila. A headlamp! (And you know this blog would not be complete without an embarrassing photo of me wearing it!)

10.1.11 – I posted this a while ago from my last practice run before the Long Beach Half. While training at the Rose Bowl, I ran into the Warrior Dash/Mud Run. This was the Polar Bear Dive (not really called that), where overheated and cakey mud-covered runners dived into a cold bath.

10.2.11 – Nothing.

And there you have it!

Run: 6 miles – 10.1.11

First of October and I left pretty late for a 6-miler. The pounding heat is my punishment. I went back to the Rose Bowl for two loops and found myself dodging hundreds of runners coming the other way. It was the Gladiator Rock N Run. D’oh. They came in waves, so that was nice. I didn’t have to dodge too much, but I did have to be sure I didn’t touch any of them. They were full of fresh mud!

The first 3 miles went great. My legs and breathing were getting it together. I brought my water bottle with me, so that took some getting used to again. I stopped using my Nathan 2 belt but maybe it’s time to bring back out. I do like the iFitness belt a lot though… it’s been my trust belt in more races.

The next 3 miles were shit. Let’s just say it. Shiiiiiiiiiit. The sun began to beat down and my legs were tired. This is what I get for not training properly and scrambling to increase mileage in a short amount of time. I pretty much walked 2 miles before I got any energy to get back to trotting pace. This, after downing a bag of Sportbeans and refilling my water bottle. Pa-the-tic. In the end, I talked to myself. Yeah I’m getting desperate if I’m talking to myself:

“You can do it. Piece of cake! Next week will be worse. This is nothing! The most important thing is to get the mileage in the books. The faster you run, the faster you can get out of the sun!”

But hey, I finished. The mileage is in the books. I’ve got sportsbra-strap tans even though I wore a long-sleeved REI spf-30 top. I’m ready for the next 6 miles.

Run: 3 miles – 9.28.11

Oh. Em. Gee. Whaaaaat? What’s thaaaat? Pounding the pavement? Running shoes on? YES!

I’ve got a couple of other runs to log but let’s log in today’s, shall we? With some encouragement from the Wife, I got up early and drove to the Rose Bowl for a 3-miler. I debated on whether to just run around the neighborhood, but if I ran at the Rose Bowl, I would HAVE to complete 3 miles – it’s a loop I can’t stop and go back.

I wore my new Nikes with my double-layered Wrightsocks again. I wanted to test out the sock-to-shoe issue one more time before giving up on them. After I got going, the socks stayed put. They did slide down a little, but not enough for me to notice.

The first 1/2 mile was fine. I got going. The next 1/2 mile sucked and I was sucking wind. I started Mile 2 pretty strong, and I made myself run the last 1/2 mile, regardless of how much I wanted to walk. I thought about all the friggin’ crunches and leg exercises I’d done in SPX pilates, and then I thought, I can totally run the last leg of this loop! SPX pilates is harder than running – this is a piece of cake. And it wasn’t, but I did it.

Bonus – I ran it in under 40 minutes!

Mileage: 3.01 miles in 00:39:51

Grade: A for effort!

Sock still slipping in my Nikes
