Eating Out at Pink Taco West Hollywood – #NOM

Pink Taco on Sunset – source: facebook.com

The lovely AJ of Confessions of a Fat Girl tried to get in my pants last week. Kidding. She invited me to be her +1 at the new Pink Taco location in West Hollywood. I’d never eaten there, and it was the perfect setting to catch up with the busy lady, so I said, “Yes I’ll put out for you, AJ!”** So off to the Sunset Strip, I went.

I pulled up to the valet ($6.50 on a weeknight), and popped out to see my date, AJ, waiting for me. You can’t miss the Pink Taco on Sunset – it’s PINK and right on Sunset where the action and wannabe actors are. We were greeted by no less than two hostesses and seated in the patio; our server’s name was Hannah, and she was so friendly and helpful. We asked her questions about drinks and food, and she knew her shiznit about the menu. The patio is great – you can see Sunset; I imagine it must be a fun place to sit during weekend nights, people-watching.

We ordered the Puerto Rican Mary Jane and The Cock Fight margaritas. I’m usually not a margarita person and unlike real cock fights, my Cock Fight was tasty and refreshing. They muddle everything fresh and don’t use mix, ie. Pink Taco doesn’t dick around with their drinks.

Hannah The Awesome Server came back with entree recommendations – we ordered the Lobster Enchiladas and the Sabana de Pollo. Jesus. Both dishes were delicious. The lobster enchiladas were perfect – rich, lobster-y (yes it’s officially in my dictionary), and filling. The Sabana de Pollo – pounded *snicker* chicken with a three-cheese mix, black beans, caramelized onions… [You know that I'm not a chicken fan, right?] But this made me think twice about ignoring chicken. This dish is also the size of my head – you can feed at least three adults with this entree. Trust me. We ended up boxing up 3/4 of my chicken dinner.

As AJ and I tried to eat our dinner, we caught up with our lives. I am so glad AJ is in my life. If you didn’t know, she was also my roomie for #Blogher11 in San Diego. We’re both headed to NYC in August for #Blogher12I’m speaking, and she’s pimping.

Creme Brulee – Pink Taco

We saved some room for dessert – a homemade vanilla creme brulee. It was not heavy at all, and it went down smoothly. *snicker* No, really, it was great – I love when restaurants use real vanilla bean and you can see the flecks in the creme brulee.

Bonus? We spotted Stephen Dorff at the next table with his homies. The Gate, people, The Gate. And Blade! He still looks good. My 12-year old self is swooning.

Final verdict – I’d love to come back with more girl friends and hang out here. [I'm looking at you, Ariel.] It _is_ a little loud during happy hour – the music is blasting, and folks are talking loudly to each other to be heard. So be warned. I suspect there will be a wait there as they just opened this spring, and it’s only the second location in the LA area. (There is a Pink Taco in Century City.) The decor is fun – very Dia de los Muertos; the vibe is hip. I felt comfortable and welcomed at Pink Taco. Most importantly, the food was delicious and the drinks were tasty. Go and try it out – I think you’ll like it as much as I do.

The fine print: This dinner was graciously hosted by Pink Taco. All opinions my own, of course.

** Yes I’m going to put in as many sexual innuendos as I can in this post. I mean, really, who names a restaurant Pink Taco and doesn’t expect snark from me?

NaBloPoMo “Ties” – via Sheryl

Sheryl wrote about the start of the new month’s NaBloPoMo – and that caught my eye. I think I might just do this. BUT I am not signing up officially – I think I’ve signed up on enough sites. :P

This month’s theme is TIES.

I’ve just re-started listening to Malcolm Gladwell‘s The Tipping Point on audiobook. The book is brilliant. One of these days I’m getting all 4 so I can write in them. Anyway, ties. This makes me think of tonight. I had dinner with Roberta tonight at BoHo – we took advantage for one last DineLA meal at a resto we’ve never been to. I appreciate the ties I have with some of my former classmates from grad school.

BTW, BoHo? The food was good but not scrumptiously delicious. I probably wouldn’t go back. My salad was fantastic. The lamb shank was ok – I think it could have used a little more spice/kick. But the best part was the chocolate mousse – yum!

Long Beach Half Marathon: Day #1

I’m going to write this in two parts. This is Day 1 (Saturday).

I got up on Saturday totally excited and almost packed. I should have taken a photo of all my crap a la Sheryl. Oh well.
By the time we left home (around 1pm), I was feeling sick. Like, fever sick. The change in weather has been fucking with my body since Vegas. (Maybe I shouldn’t have spent time in the pool at the Mirage… meh. Too late now!)

We head to Citadel first b/c Bubba needed to return something. Then we were off to the Long Beach Courtyard by Marriott, which I had made reservations WEEKS ago.

We get there and I get to the front desk.
You ready for this?

I booked the wrong date!!!

And they’re sold out b/c of the marathon and some conventions going on. MOTHERFUCKER. AND.. get this – because I’m tagged as a “no show,” I got charged the room rate anyway.

What a fucking expensive mistake on my part. *tear* At this point, I was panicking and half trying to remember to be pragmatic. This not only affects me, it affects Washy who already drove down from the Valley to LB! Washy and her hubs Nick were staying in the same room with us. So I try to call her a gazillion times, but she must not be getting calls, so I finally leave a text and a voicemail.

Then I call the Best Western across the street, the Rodeway Inn across the street, and the Vagabond Inn down the street. Good luck! I got a room at the Vagabond Inn.

OMG. This place is ghetto! But apparently Bubba thinks we’ve stayed in even more ghetto situations. I dunno. I wouldn’t want to shower in that bathroom. Oh I wish I took a photo of our room. I am glad we were able to still find a room!!

We get to the Vagabond and then the front desk guy says we can only have ONE car in the parking lot! Shit! Washy calls me back and starts laughing – thank god! She says she’ll leave their car at the Marriott and pay the $10 there. Whew!

We all meet up at the LB Expo, and I’m pretty beat. I’m feeling pretty crappy but still excited. We get our bibs, take a few photos, and we both buy Body Glide. (Thank god we did!) We walk out and head towards Shoreline Village to hang out. The weather’s getting cooler and we head back to get their bags and get to the hotel.

By now, the three of them are laughing at the room, and pointing at the carpet. It’s pretty fug. (I’m still upset about the $145 mistake. *sigh*) For our carboload dinner, we head to La Strada, rec’d by V! SO GOOD. I forget (sort of) about the hotel and just eat awesome Italian food.

Afterward, Nick turns the tv on and some old 80′s movie is on. Who does he ask for the title and the synopsis? Yours truly. It was “My Secret Admirer” with C Thomas Howell, Lori Loughlin, and Kelly Preston – triple gross. But yes, I did watch it back in the 80′s; it was on tv. :p That’s my excuse.

another crap movie i've seen

And we all tried to sleep. We’d get up at 5:20am the next day.

Appreciative 10

Yes yes, finally – a list of 10! Today’s 10 is brought to you by a strong shot of espresso. I met Roberta at Gelato Cafe off Tujunga in Studio City. I ordered the affogato w/ chocolate gelato – OMG – ah-ma-zing! I’m so hopped up on caffeine, my head is hurting. (And you know what makes a caffeine headache feel better? More caffeine! Currently having a cup of tea.)

  1. good conversations/catching up – every time we get together, we can talk about anything – I appreciate this so much
  2. our annual Vegas trip – we’ve gone to Vegas with different groups of friends, and every time, I have a wonderful time
  3. gelato – shit, this place was pretty amazing
  4. being able to pass an opportunity to a friend
  5. being honest and open to “criticism”
  6. free parking – the one thing I don’t like about Tujunga Village is all the metered parking – do.not.like.
  7. dineLA! – we’re going to Ruth’s Chris after my race!
  8. Sheryl, Steph, Anita, Jen, and everyone who has supported and encouraged me to give this running thing a chance, and here I am now, just a few days from my first Half Marathon!
  9. Dimetapp for kids in grape flavor – chug this for a day and get better!
  10. toast – I could eat bread everyday
