It’s been a long time since my last blog post. I’ve been busy… and I know I need to go back to my regularly blogging schedule. To start, here’s this week’s Top Ten Tuesday by the Broke & Bookish team. I’ve already completed my 50 books in 2013 goal (May 9) and I’m still going strong.

50 Books in 2012 – Update before Labor Day

Gunmetal Magic by Ilona Andrews. Here’s a lady with guns. Lots of them. I’m in!

Book count: 35 read, 15 more to go! I spent some time not reading Kevin Hearne’s Hammered (Book #3) in the last few weeks. Instead, I borrowed Jennifer Estep’s Mythos books and flew through them. I also re-read the Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews (1-5) last week. I just can’t get into Hammered and blast through it. I’m about 65% done, so the good stuff should be rolling around the corner. Yet I put that aside and read something else. So I bought Gunmetal Magic and started reading that on my Kindle.

The other night, on our way home from dinner, I cornered the Wife in the car. (Er, he was driving so I guess he was trapped.) I said, “Give me 2 minutes! I don’t have anyone else to talk about these books!” I proceeded to tell the Wife how well thought out the Kate Daniels books were – how you could jump right in to her world and not blink an eye about tech and magic waves. I went on to tell the Wife that the author (husband-wife team under the name Ilona Andrews) didn’t force the main characters’ relationship(s) and let them progress over the series. Then my time was up and the Wife sighed. “That was 2 minutes of my life.” Ha!

Have you noticed how amazeballs some of these book covers are? While I love reading on my Kindle, I miss not having the actual books with me because of these covers! Look at the one at the top – hi, woman, with gun, looking badass – because she is! – of course I want that in my bookshelf!! But no, I bought the Kindle version which is black and white. (At least on my Kindle3.) Then look at the cover below for Kevin Hearne’s book – hi, druid guy, with a giant sword, looking badass – because he is! – it would be great to have that in my bookshelf too. Oh well. Kindle, you make it so easy to buy books with a touch of a button…

Note to self: Need to find a real bookclub that reads UF like me and not torture the Wife with my nerdy excitement for Gunmetal Magic.

Friday Five: 8.10.12 – Back to Normal Edition

BlogHer 2012… what a way to start August with a bang! I ended July with my SMCLA event and went straight to flying out to New York in intense heat and humidity. Like most of you, I’m trying to get back to normal, and it’s pretty tough. Maybe normalcy is not the right word. Perhaps it’s just trying to get stuff done without feeling so overwhelmed because you were gone for a few days.

Ready or not, here is my Friday Five for August 10, 2012 -five things I’ve picked up this week.

  1. You CAN travel without getting sick when you come back home! In case you don’t know, I get sick EVERY TIME I come back from travel – domestic or international. But this time, I didn’t get sick! I took it relatively easy at BlogHer (ha!), got 5 hours of sleep each night, and started using Halo, a product that debuted at the con. The father-son team was there to talk about this product, and I think it really works, no lie. It’s an oral spray that helps keep airborne germs at bay. I tend to get people breathing on me a lot, in a non-sexual manner. Mouth-breathers. Then, in turn, I breathe in their germs. They get me sick – all the time. I started spraying on Saturday afternoon and kept it up until Monday. Note: I also gargled with hot water and salt when I got home. I keep my bottle in my Macguyver purse now. You never know when you’ll run into mouth-breathers. (Apparently, I run into them all friggin’ day.)
  2. I headed to the JW Marriott/Ritz-Carlton at LA Live to see my visiting pal who was nerding it up at Siggraph. We had drinks at WP24, dinner at LA Market, and met chef Kerry Simon in the process. That was cool.
  3. It has become clear to me that I need to take a class or five on Photoshop and Illustrator. At my day job, there is a team of creatives who do the bulk of designing product packages, online assets, and the like. I’ve been able to tweak their assets for my projects but I want to get to a point where I’m not asking for their help all the time. Granted, that is their job and I have my own job, but when they’re slammed, I need to be able to edit or create a draft asset ASAP.
  4. My reading has suffered this week. Every night, I’m zonked out once I hit the bed. I’m still in the middle of Hammered by Kevin Hearne, book 3 in the series. I’m halfway done and not as engaged as the first two books.
  5. A personal thing – I got a promotion at work. My review went well, and my promotion went through last month. I now have a “senior” in front of my title at my day job. Like Martha would say, it’s a good thing.

Book Review: Hounded by Kevin Hearne – Solid.

Solid. That’s the only word I wrote on my Goodreads book review. WTF. I don’t know why I left it at that. Well, it’s true. It’s a solid book. Sidenote: If you look at the model of the cover, he looks great. Close up, not so much. What’s with the chin pubes?

Hounded by Kevin Hearne (Iron Druid Chronicles #1)

I borrowed the audiobook version of Hounded by Kevin Hearne (The Iron Druid Chronicles #1) from the library and listened to it on my commutes. It was fantastic! It took a little while to get all the names but I’m so glad I started with the audiobook and a narrator who pronounced all the names. (The names sound so different when you read book #2.)

Atticus O’Sullivan is the last living druid.. living in Arizona with his giant Irish wolfhound Oberon. [What's a druid?] Atticus owns a bookstore, not unlike The Magic Box a la Buffy. He’s in Arizona to stay away/hide from Aenghus Og (see? how would you pronounce that? listen to the audiobook!) who is trailing him, claiming Atticus stole his sword called Fragarach.

There’s a lot of set-up and action in this first book of the series. [It was not like a Book 1 of some of the books I've read recently. You know, when the author is forced to write a lot of set-up and filler so they can sell Book 2.] Atticus is a great character – smart ass, sarcastic, fun, Buffy-like. I want to be his friend! Most of all, I want a dog like Oberon. Cracks me up. Oberon is right up there with GiGi (from Green-Eyed Demon) as best sidekick ever. The supporting characters are all useful and not there for dressing. Each has a role in Atticus’ life, whether he likes them or not.

The books are told in the first person. I didn’t expect to like the book so much, but I did. I didn’t expect to like or even relate to Atticus, but I did! There are very few YA books that I’ve read that have male protagonists as likeable as Atticus. At this point, he’s one of my favorite main characters in books. (You know how hard that is for me to admit… a DUDE on my favorites list.) The story is detailed and well captured in Hearne’s writing. I can imagine how long it takes for Atticus to bike over to his Irish neighbor’s home to mow the lawn. I can imagine what the layout of the bookstore looks like. I can imagine what his minor characters look like.

I liked the book so much, I bought the other books on my Kindle. Yep. That’s how you do a series, writers! Kill it with an awesome audiobook.

Grade: A

Buy or Borrow: Buy! I think this isn’t just for YA readers.
