Friday Five: 6.1.12 – Free the Donuts!

Happy June 1st!

First off, it’s National Donut Day! If you live near Dunkin Donuts or Krispy Kreme or Tim Hortons, you might want to stop by for a free donut. I actually called Voodoo Doughnut to check, and no dice. Their response,”Every day is donut day.” :P

Here are my five for the week:

1. Keeping my meat intake to one meal per day or less regimen. This has helped with my GERD  issues. Being 80% vegetarian continues to be my best solution in my old age.

2. Running with your Wife is not really running with your Wife. The Wife smoked past me when we decided to run together one day. This ends up being an exercise in catching up.

3. Yanni Grilling Cheese – this is the bomb. I ran into the woman who was grilling up this cheese for sampling at my Whole Foods. I was sold. This cheese pretty much melts without spilling all over. It’s perfect.

4. Middle-aged men around here who still wear Affliction and Ed Hardy clothing. You’re just asking for it. Funny enough, it seems men around here (LA and OC) think the husbands from RHOC are good fashion role models. Bwhahahahaha!

5. Hold on, still laughing.

5. Mad Men. This last episode made me depressed for Joan.

Not a Fan of Pancakes… Until Now. HPK Highland Park Kitchen

Uh. My name is Chris Lam and I’m not a fan of pancakes.  When done wrong, the taste of them will make me want to vomit. They’re filling and they stick to my stomach for a very long time. After eating a flapjack, I tend to feel like an Alien has laid its babies in my gut.

Until now.

The Wife and I headed out to HPK in (duh) Highland Park for breakfast one day. My eyes bulged and my eyebrows waggled at the Wife when the words “bananas foster pancakes.” That’s like a dare! How could I resist?

Come to mama! Bananas Foster Pancakes - HPK

I ordered these babies and a mimosa to celebrate… breakfast, of course. Who doesn’t celebrate breakfast? I don’t know how they did it but these suckers are FLUFFY. Yes, still filling, but fluffy! I’m not sure how that works – these are pancakes loaded up with caramelized banana slices, whipped cream, and caramel sauce. No matter, these are bomb. I highly recommend them.

Chicken and Waffles, HPK

The Wife ordered the Chicken and Waffles, which he gave a thumbs up. (This is rare. The wife usually says “It’s ok” for EVERYTHING.)

Overall, a great meal to start the weekend. I’ve been regularly impressed with every “new” restaurant we try in Highland Park. I love that it’s so close to where we live. I’d love to find a home here so I’m even closer to good food and quirky stores.

Want to duplicate my eye waggling? Here’s the Yelp link to HPK for reviews, hours and a map. Or you can go to their official website at http://www.hpkitchen.com/.

The fine print: This meal was not hosted. We paid with our hardearned cash, shaking our moneymakers.

TWiP: December 2011, Part 2

Yeah, I’m late! Whee! Here’s part 2. Things I’ve run into during the second half of December. Coming soon – January. Promise. All photos taken either with my HTC EVO or Canon point & shoot.

When I was a kid, I had a sea monkey zoo. Then they died. I found these at Big Lots and was oh so tempted to keep another tank at work. If they’re really brine shrimp, how can they “survive” as dry eggs for months before someone comes by and begins the cycle? I’m confused.

I was walking up the street from the office for some grub and ran into this old time gas station! I wonder if anyone’s already scouted it for tv shoots or commercials. It’d be neat to have a still-working station here.

Christmas was coming around and I was hoping to pick up some really cheap earphones for work. I mean, like $5 cheap. Instead, I saw these! Un/fortunately, I already have a bluetooth earpiece for my phone, so I skipped it.

We had a department holiday party at the fancy bowling alley nearby. What struck me as comical was the continuous loop of holiday music videos this place managed to run. I don’t remember who was on the monitor in this picture, but I know I found it amusing…

The good wife took me to Baskin-Robbins one night after dinner and treated me to some ice cream. 20 years ago, I remember being introduced to Jamoca Almond Fudge. TWENTY years ago!

These are some of the best tacos I’ve ever had. Hands down. On Tuesdays, it’s their fish taco day. On Thursdays, I believe their tacos are 99-cents apiece. BARGAIN LUNCH. You have to try these at Tacos Enseneda.

You gotta see this in person to appreciate it. Friends decorated Joanne’s door for Christmas. Awwwwwwesome. I have a better picture somewhere, but the best part was when our other friend’s BF filmed her unwrapping her door. Nerd orgasm? Yes. I’d like my future front door of my future house to be just like this. Not sure if the wife would go for it, but it would be so awesome!!

One of my best friends’ kid was turning four and I walked into the Disney Store to see if there was something I could get for said kid. I texted my friend a picture of these and asked if Kid would like them. Hah! Friend said “No, she’s not into Princesses, she likes Dora and Nick Jr.” Sweet. But check these out – they’re giant sized dolls. They look more normal than the usual Barbies that I’d be ok with buying one of these for some kid.

The wife covers his face whenever I try to get a picture of him with my phone. So I got this one instead. We were at a game on New Year’s Eve, and they gave out New Year’s crowns.

Well there you go. I have a few more pics I want to share for December but will have to post them separately. On to January!

Here’s another installment of TWiP!

What happens when you have the week off? If you’re like me, you go to all the Asian places for ethnic grub. In this case, I met up with my best pal Jane for a mani/pedi and lunch at Golden Deli in Temple City.

After lunch and a family visit, I headed out to Chino Hills to check out Dripp.

I was waiting in line for a package when I spotted a sign along the wall. It noted that the Glendale US Post Office was a historical landmark. I looked up and saw this. Beautiful.

Do you turn off your Kindle or put it to sleep when you are done reading? I tend to put it to Sleep. A lot of the time, the screensaver is this picture of Emily Dickinson. I don’t know about you but it scares me all the time.
