WIRI: WeWood Watches – Made of Wood!

I’m a watch person. I love watches. My mom’s gifted me a number of Superman watches, which I collect for fun. I look for sturdy watches that can take a lot of punishment. I save my money to buy a watch every few years. My favorite watch has been my Skagen from 9 years ago, which has been abused by my clumsiness. I wear a watch almost every day. I don’t know why people think smartphones will make watches obsolete. It’s way easier to glance at your wrist than to pull out a phone from your bag or pocket. Plus they’re a great accessory.

During the holidays, Gilt ran a flash sale for WeWood watches. I was curious – I’d never heard of a wooden watch before and wondered how they’d actually hold up.  For every watch sold, they plant a tree. Sold! I bought a watch for myself and one for The Wife.

WeWood Date - Black

WeWood Date – Black

This is mine and I love it. I’ve worn it almost every day and it has already taken some bangs and slams from me. So far, it’s still alive. It’s very lightweight. You’d think wood would be heavy but it’s not. Hardly. This fact sold The Wife. Most men’s watches are heavy and that’s the main reason he doesn’t wear a watch. His WeWood Watch is so light, he’s been wearing it often.

The clasp is my least favorite part of the watch. It takes a little bit of practice to get it on, but it’s fine.

If the watch is too big when it comes in (as it was for me), it’s easy to take the links off. It also helps to have another person there to help you push the screws out.

The model I have is called the Date Watch in Black. As you can see, it’s not quite black, but more of a very dark brown. This is dependent on the wood being used, so if you decide to order one for yourself, know that the colors are probably going to be a little lighter than listed.

So far, I’ve already slammed my hand (and wrist) into a file cabinet, bathroom door, and car door, and the watch, my wedding ring, and my fingers have all made it!

I don’t know about you but the older I get, the more picky I am with my pricey purchases. This – it’s a reco and two thumbs up for me!

If you have questions about the watch, you can contact the company directly. They’ve got an office in Hollywood. Yeah!

If you have a WeWood watch or have other watch recos, let me know in the comments! Enjoy!

I’ll Always Brake for a Hello Kitty Launch Party (Forever 21 + Hello Kitty Forever)

forever21-hellokitty-logo

What’d you do last night? I had a date with a certain cat. I headed to the Americana at Brand in Glendale to attend the Forever 21 + Hello Kitty Forever launch party! My invite came in, and I thought – Hello Kitty? Hell yeah! I may have a MacGyver purse and it’s all fancy, but I still use a Hello Kitty wallet.

Let me just preface this post by saying two things:

1. It was hella crowded, even with my “you were invited so you don’t have to wait outside in the long line” card.

2. This is going to be an image-heavy post.

Ready? Go.

F21 entrance

The display at the F21 entrance – roped off in pink.

Each of the displays were very pretty. I’m a sucker for wearables so I’m always staring at the mannequins in stores to see if I can pull off this or that. There was a ton of bedding, which I really wanted to buy, but I knew the Wife would adamantly object to sleeping in Hello Kitty bedding…

I may be Miss Thang online, but I still had to wait to get IN to the collection upstairs.

How great is this? I’m always a sucker for people who hire women DJs. DJ Shiva spun music all night, and it was good.  If you’d like to listen to her mixes – head to her Soundcloud page. She’s local – yay!

The lady of the hour herself – Miss Hello Kitty. People were clamoring to take pics with her. I snapped a quick one here. Whew.

Everyone wanted a pic with the Lady herself. I went shopping instead. Cute outfit, though, yeah?

IMG_0762-nailpolish

Hello Kitty nail polish – this would make a great stocking stuffer.

Don’t care for Hello Kitty? (Blasphemy!) Other characters are in the collection too, including Badtz Maru and Chococat.

IMG_0764-badtzmaru

Don’t like that cat? Badtz-Maru had a line of clothes too.

I was very tempted to buy this for my iPadasaurus.

There were other displays like this Chococat station – Forever 21

IMG_0775-crowded

This pic doesn’t do it justice. It was PACKED. I could barely get through to pay (at the opposite end of the building.)

The party gave you a ‘passport book’ to get stamps when you purchased X dollar amount. With your purchases, you could get a manicure, photobooth opp, and/or gift bag.

Gals getting their Hello Kitty nail art done.

I bought two tops – a Peter Pan-collared Hello Kitty blouse and a Chococat pastel tangerine sweater. The other prints and tops were a lot louder than what I’d wear to work, so I passed on them. Check out the F21+HK line at Forever 21′s preview site.

In all, the launch party looked like a terrific success for F21 and Hello Kitty/Sanrio. I missed meeting Onch Movement, the designer of the collection. The inability to move freely about the cabin made it tough to find Onch. Or I’m just frakking blind.

Big thanks to the PR folks who invited me to the launch party. Thanks to F21 for having the party closer to my hood. For once, I didn’t have to drive too far to get to an event!

The fine print: A PR firm repping F21′s launch party invited me. This is not a sponsored post. All copy is my own honest opinion and thoughts. Obviously.

TC Charton Sunnies: Cat-Eyes for Your Asian Eyes and a GIVEAWAY!

Patricia - TC Charton sunglasses

TC Charton – Patricia

9/26/12 note: Giveaway/entries closed 9/25/12. Stand by for winner.

Recently I was contacted by the PR team at TC Charton, an eyewear designer who makes glasses for Asians. Holla! Finally, someone who ‘got it.’ I know it’s hard to believe, but not all people who wear sunglasses are white. [We Asians tend to have the bottoms of sunglasses hit our cheeks all the time. Other friends will tell me that their glasses just slide off their nose. WTF?] I have a flat face and when I smile my cheeks bulge out. The bottom of all of my sunglasses tends to end up with my makeup, and who really needs foundation on a nice pair of glasses?

Enter TC Charton and glasses that don’t slide off nor scrape off the foundation from your cheeks. The woman behind TC Charton is Alexandra Peng. (Double holla! A person of color and a woman – wipe me off the floor, I’m weeping.) Peng spent over 16 years in the optical industry designing for high-end luxury brands before she went out on her own to design eyewear fit for Asian faces.

TC Charton sent me three pairs (of my choice) to try on. [First, can we just flag how generous they were to send me THREE pairs to try?] I picked a few different pairs to see where each pair would hit me in my cheek and to see if their styles would flatter my face. I picked a couple of men/unisex styles to see if they’d fit the Wife as well.

I think you know which one I picked! The MIRIAM cat-eyes fit the best and I thought the bigger lenses and the style were the most flattering on my face.

Another plus I’ve noticed is the quality of the LENSES. They’re so clear, they’re almost polarized lenses. I kept comparing my old sunnies (Target $20 ones) to the Miriam glasses, and WHOA – the lenses are so clear (even though they’re tinted). In super bright sunlight (like the days we’ve been having in LA), my eyes were not squinting. These glasses were saving my ass (eyes).

The price of these are comparable to a pair of fancy Ray-Bans or Marc by Marc Jacobs glasses. The plus – they will fit your face! Let me repeat this again – these TC Charton sunnies WILL FIT YOUR FACE.

If you’re still on the fence, here are two things you can do:

1. Go to their store locator and find your local business that carries TC Charton so you can try them on yourself, and/or

2. ENTER MY GIVEAWAY!!!

Drumroll please….the TC Charton Sunglasses Giveaway details!

Here comes the fun part. If you want your own pair of TC Charton sunglasses, look no further! TC Charton is generously giving away a pair to one of my blog readers! And no, you don’t have to be Asian or a certain gender to enter. This would make a great gift for the holidays – hint hint!

1. Head over to the TC Charton website and check out all the different styles they have to offer.

2. Come back to my blog and leave a comment here with the style you’d like!

3. That’s it. Be sure to leave a valid email address so we can contact you if you win!

Random winner selected ON MY BIRTHDAY, SEPT 26. (So your deadline to comment is Tues Sept 25 11:59PM PST.) US/Canada entries only please. (Sorry!)

The Extras:

Help TC Charton build their social media presence by:

1. Joining them on Facebook: fb.com/tccharton – Learn more about their upcoming styles and events!

2. Tweeting them on Twitter @tccharton – talk to Alexandra directly!

The fine print: TC Charton is sponsoring this giveaway of one pair of sunnies. TC Charton (sponsor) sent three pairs for trial; I got to keep one pair. Sponsor will send prize directly from their home office in Sunnyvale, CA. Deadline to enter giveaway is 9/25/12 11:59PM PST.

BlogHer 2012 Recap: Part 2 – Parties, Bloggers, and Kickin’ It with the Rockettes! (Warning: Pic Heavy)

Ok ok, so it’s been yet another week since my last post about BlogHer12. I’m finishing this recap up – all the super experiences outside of the sessions and expo. Let’s go!

Working Out with the Rockettes

One of the best things I did at BlogHer was sponsored by Pfizer (the people who make Centrum and Caltrate). I GOT TO MEET THE ROCKETTES AND DANCE LIKE THEM! A few weeks before the con, I was invited to a special workout with the Rockettes. HELLO. YES, I AM SO IN. If you’ve ever seen me dance (wedding reception), you’ll know I have zero rhythm, which is kind of ironic because the Wife is formerly a high school drummer and drum major. I can’t even clap to a beat for long periods of time. I’ll end up clapping to some other beat other than the music. (Ask me about last week’s FUN. show and the clapping I did there.)

We’re about to learn the Toy Soldier March by the Rockettes!

Our workout consisted of learning two dance routines – 1. Toy Solider March – stiff legs, locked knees and 2. the high kick line! If you want to see better photos and a video, check out Super Exhausted’s blog post. She’s got a great one of me laughing. (Thank you for catching that face!)

Post-workout, the Rockettes answer our questions – BlogHer12

We learned that the tallest dancers are set in the middle of the KICK LINE so that when everyone kicks up to their head, they’re all in-line with each other. Everyone has to try out – all of them, including current season Rockettes. (Sounds like the Laker Girls.) There is a height requirement, and tryouts used to be in NY, LA and Chicago. They are now only held in New York – the line wraps around the block and then some on tryouts day. Some dancers even plan their pregnancy around the Rockettes schedule so they can come back and try out for the following season! Hardcore, y’all. At the end of our workout, we got to ask our two dancers questions. I asked the last question – do either of them blog? Unfortunately they don’t, but obviously they were surrounded by women who’d love to get them started!

Yes, I took a photo of a photo. Rockettes – BlogHer12

After our workout, we were treated to smoothies by Pfizer. I recommend the strawberry flavor. In our gift bag were two vitamin bottles: Centrum ProNutrients Omega3 and Caltrate 600+D Plus Minerals. Something to note: the Centrum ProNutrients supplement pill is WAY smaller than your typical fish oil pill. (It’s not just a fish oil pill.) This makes it easier to swallow than the horse pills. I know I don’t get enough vitamins in my food – hello, burgers, salads, carbs carbs carbs, and my best friend, coffee. I was really glad to see that the pill size was small. No one needs to feel like they’re swallowing a quarter… every day. Big thanks to Pfizer, BlogHer, and of course, the Rockettes for making my trip to BlogHer so fun this year.

The “BlogHer-inspired Private-ish” Parties

In the evening, I walked over to the California Dreams event sponsored by Single Edition Media and Foot Petals, and hosted by bloggers Cari Bee, Kitty Bradshaw. I met several bloggers at the party including Kia (Jeans and a T-Shirt), the gals from BlogWaffle (who are behind Twitarded!) and TJ (Chronicles of a Fat Girl named Tejota).

I also met the founder of Foot Petals, Tina Aldatz! If you haven’t used Foot Petals, give it a try. I have them in all of my heels and a couple of my heeled sandals.

Another use for the Heavenly Heels pads – Cushion the TOP of your foot when wearing peeptoes! – BlogHer12

I told them that heel pads never last with me because my heel tends to scrape the stickers off and I’ve wasted the heel pads. BUT, check this out.. they showed me how to use the heel pad in a different way – stick them under your peeptoe to cushion the TOP of your foot! Genius.

The next evening, I was invited to the Naughty Monkey party hosted by Hello Amanda, Ashes into Fashion, Glamgerous, Nany’s Klozet, and Flor de Maria Fashion. Who wouldn’t want to be invited to a party about shoes?

Oxfords. I could use these too. Naughty Monkey party – BlogHer12

One thing that struck me about this party (well, the showroom) was the variety of styles the brand carried. They went from sandals and wedges to high heels (with sequins and other fun materials) to boots and flats. They’re stylish and affordable. With the way fashion changes so quickly, it’s good to see a brand that offers a lower price point for stylish shoes. If you’re not familiar with the brand, think Steve Madden and Michael Antonio. Thanks to Naughty Monkey and our hosts!

My Favorite Part of the Con: Meeting New Bloggers

Here’s the last part of my post/recap. Meeting new bloggers. I had a great time this year meeting new bloggers. I honed in on my elevator speech as I shook hand over hand. I think my business card was also quite helpful in getting people to laugh. (I passed out the Asian blogger card the whole weekend so that my ‘brand’ would be consistent. Don’t worry, I made a bunch of Keep Calm or I’ll Cut You cards too for the next meet-up.)

Most notably, I met the team behind Evil Slutopia at Sparklecorn. For me, they’re rockstars. I started reading their blog when they began to post chapter reviews of 50 Shades of Grey. The blog is not only smart, thought-provoking, and progressive, it’s FUNNY. I asked them about their sponsor Masque, which makes a ‘strip’ that blocks your tastebuds for… oral sex. Let’s call them Blowjob Strips. Genius. Just genius. It’s too bad Masque didn’t set up a booth at BlogHer – they’d have run out of Blowjob Strips. Easily. You know the daddy bloggers at BlogHer would’ve taken boxes home to their wives, too.

BlogHer 12 part 2 - 01 - birds of a feather

OMG I found Asians at BlogHer! – Birds of a Feather breakfast – BlogHer 12

When I sat by myself at the Women of Color table during the Birds of a Feather breakfast, I found it a little intimidating and depressing that I sat by myself. Eh. Whaddyagonnado? But I figured SOMEONE had to sit there to get a conversation going, so I stayed there. And it paid off. I met four more Asian American bloggers just by sitting there! Shout out to Fourth Breakfast, Lady M, Frugal Flip, and my mystery friend whose fitness blog hasn’t been created yet! AND they’re all from California – holla!

Below are a list of bloggers I met and traded biz cards with. Yes, it’s a list. If I forgot your name or blog, please tweet me or email me so I can add you on this list!

This year’s BlogHer was A-OK. I haven’t decided on Chicago yet, but I’m hopeful. Thank you, bloggers, for making this con meaningful and worth it.

Shout-out to my new blogger pals (in no particular order):

I also got to see my pals from So Cal:

Please please please email me if I missed adding you to my list! Catch y’all later and thanks!
