Final Thoughts before Tomorrow

[cross-post]

DUDE. 13.1 miles.

DUDE. 13.1 miles.

I’m tired this morning but I’m excited for tomorrow’s race. I think the sooner I can get to Long Beach, the more excited (or apprehensive?) I’ll be. I did meditation this morning to clear my head and focus. I’ll try to remember to do that tomorrow. I went through some old blog posts when I first started running. LOL! I can’t believe I spent 3 weeks learning to run ONE MILE. awesome. I high-five myself for that one.

I just looked at the route map. Sheeeeesh. It’s LONG! What the hell?

Anyway, I semi-packed my bag. We’re heading out after lunch. I’m looking forward to the Expo b/c I still need to pick up an extra pouch to strap to my hyrdration belt. Overall the Nathan belt has been good to me, except the pouch that’s attached to the belt sucks. It’s way too small to put my BB AND sport beans in there. So I want to strap another one on (adding more weight – blah) and put my phone & ID in there. No camera since I have no more space.

The iPod is charging now. I took off all the Green Day and a couple other bands that now make my ears bleed. I dunno – for some reason, Billy Joe’s voice just makes me want to stab my ears these days. This is a weird new discovery b/c one of the best rock shows I’d ever seen was a Green Day show at the Long Beach Arena! Heh.

I also added some slower songs – a lot more Barenaked Ladies, Ben Lee, Ben Folds. I don’t know about you other runners, but sometimes I sing when I run. I found it helps me breathe. So when you pass me, don’t be surprised if you hear me singing Lady Gaga!

Good luck to Anita and Sheryl! I’ll have my phone with me so I hope to see you at the starting line AND the finish line!!

Race Recap: PCC 5K

I know, this is late. It’s been a few days since the PCC 5K. Here’s the recap.

I didn’t sleep well that night. I kept waking up. Too excited, I guess. By the time 4:30am rolled around, I just got up. I had a small bowl of cereal and got on the internets. Yay Google Reader.

The Hubs woke up early and came out to support me on my first race. Hurrah! We got to the Rose Bowl by 6:30am and met up with Anita who was picking up her bib. We hung out for a while, just stretching a little bit and catching up.

When the big horn sounded, we got going. I felt I was trying to keep up with everyone, which was such a bad idea. I ran a good 10 minutes before taking a walk break. Within the first mile, Anita left me in the dust, along with the bulk of the racers. Well, I still had the slow walkers behind me. Heh.

Right at about the start of Mile 2, I smelled pot. For real. WTF? Who’s got time to wake up at 7am and light up at a golf course? And WHY would you wake up so freaking early to light up? It’s a Saturday!

During Mile 2, I felt my thighs getting heavier and heavier. I also felt I was getting slower as the sun rose and the weather got warmer. [Note to self: MUST start running in the mornings.] My neighboring company consisted of a bunch of walkers and woman with hiking poles. I pretty much kept up with her – she was a FAST walker. :P

Going into Mile 3, the sun was in my face and I was cursing myself for not wearing a hat. Around the last leg/bend of the route, I was literally blinded by the sun that was shining right into all of us. No matter, I sucked it up and ran the rest of the way. The Hubs and Anita were waiting for me at the finish line, cheering me on. I started to laugh.

Almost to the finish line

Almost to the finish line

Final time (approx): 00:44:10. Under 45 mins! Hurrah!

Post-race thoughts:

  • MUST MUST MUST start running in the mornings to acclimate self with rising sun
  • Must wear a hat
  • Need to wear sunscreen on shoulders – I’m getting brown

Wk 1 part deux – Today’s run: 3 miles

Guess who I ran into at the start of Mile 3? Anita! She generously turned around and let me finish my last mile. w00t! There was a giant dog turd on the side of the route – thank you, disgusting dog owners. You make it suck for everyone. Happy Tuesday!

Today’s run around the RB. I started around 7:30 tonight; much later than usual. It’s my lower left shin area that is killing me after Mile 1. I walked a lot of Mile 2 and tried to run. I was doing alright when I didn’t think about how my left foot was a peg leg. Definitely going back to the store (oh why did you have to be so far?!) to ask them about my foot/leg.

Anita and a gal from school both emailed me info on the PCC 5K that’s coming up next weekend. I’ll be signing up with Anita and look forward to being exposed to my first race (and its conditions)! Whee!
