TWiP: 2.1 – 2.5.12

What?! Yes! It’s an official 2012 This Week in Photos (WEEK) post! Here we are in February, and I am making a solid effort to get these up every week. For real. Here we go.

Do you want to participate in TWiP? You should! Let me know so I can add you to my TWiP carnival.

I was at Whole Foods and ran into these at the checkout aisle. I took a pic because I wanted to read reviews on these Zand Organic zinc lozenges.

Have you tried Kombucha? I’m a fan when I have a cold or need something other than coffee to keep me energized. My favorite brand is Wonder Drink, but I tried GT’s Kombucha in Multi-Green and nearly gagged. I recommend the fruitier flavors.

Everyone needs duck tape (I call it duct tape, do you?). But do you have Hello Kitty duck tape (duct tape)?! Target sells this roll of awesomeness.

We visited a real estate office and saw THIS! I laughed and you know I had to take a pic.

Grandma made some dishes and picked up others for our post-Chinese New Year lunch. Trust me, everything is good on this table.

Met up with Jen on Saturday night to watch ASSSSCAT at UCB. Eliza Coupe was the guest monologist from one of Jen’s favorite shows, Happy Endings.

TWiP: January 2012

I didn’t take as many TWiP pics in January as I thought. Many of  them have kids and friends in them, and I can’t post those. Fret not, dear reader, I do have some pics to share. Here is January’s “This Week in Photos” – month edition.

I visited the local Mitsuwa Market for an adventure in Japanese products. First up, eyelid tape. I remember when I was high school, classmates were looking to have eyelid surgery. Why? I don’t know.

I bought this Nescafe instant coffee thinking it would be similar to Starbucks’ VIA. It is not. The Nescafe stuff is WEAK. If you like weak coffee, you will like this. I was also intrigued by Krematop but not intrigued enough to pay $6 for it. Maybe next time.

I miss eating these. They’re salted eggs. You can put them in fried rice, or eat them with your rice.

I also found THESE! Durian Chips for those of you who like smelly fruit.

On Jan 14, I drove down to Long Beach to visit the LA Travel & Adventure Show. I also met up with Jen Miner of the Vacation Gals and LACOT before her panel on mobile travel apps!

My FFAB friends met up for lunch, and I brought Porto’s fruit tart because I wasn’t sure about the kids’ allergies or whatnot. Next time, it’s going to be chocolate. Kid allergies be damned.

FFAB lunch ends with Porto's!

As you know, I’m on the Board of SMCLA, and we had our January event. Here’s the crowd shot of our event! (Mark your calendars – Feb 21 for Social CRM!)

Well, that’s it for January. Everything else is restricted. Moving on…. Feb!

Friday Five: 2.10.12

So I’m back from my work conference, and it’s going to be a long ass weekend. I thought I could do some work before and after each day’s sessions, but nope, my brain dropped dead as soon as the clock struck 5:00PM each day (each day started at 8AM, ended at 5). My 6:00AM wakeup time only helped with the most urgent tasks. This means I’ll be working over the weekend to catch up and prep for next week.

Here’s what I’ve learned this week:

  1. Validation. This conference validates everything (social media plan and strategies) I’ve planned and/or want to do at work. Now the question is, will I get to work on it and implement?
  2. Louis CK’s Live at the Beacon Theater is a wonderful download to watch on the plane. I laughed so much (and out loud) on the way there, the flight attendant came over and asked what I was laughing at.
  3. My friend (who lives in LV) and I went to eat a new ramen place that opened in the Chinatown area. Three words: butter corn ramen.
  4. The Mirage has some crazy-strong toilet flushes. I tell you, it’s like an industrial flush in your guest room. I bet you could flush a whole aquarium in one flush.
  5. Las Vegas isn’t fun when you’re by yourself. Drinking makes me sleepy so I don’t do it often, and smokey casino air makes my eyes red. What can I say? I’m old.

And there you have it. Have a great weekend!

WIRI: Work Epiphany – Travel is a Privilege

Las Vegas as seen on a plane waiting to deboard

I was at a work conference these past few days in Las Vegas. It was my first time flying into Vegas, if you can believe it. All these years (and let me tell you, it’s MANY years), I’ve always driven to Vegas! It was hosted at the Mirage, and I literally stayed in that property for the three days. I didn’t go out except to meet up for dinner with an old high school friend who lived there. I didn’t see the sun; I saw flourescent light. I got dinged by a resort fee by the Mirage each day – and I didn’t even know about it until after I got the bill. WTF. Gah. I dislike incompetent people, especially those who don’t tell you at check-in that you’ll be charged for something you won’t be using.

Whatever. Back to the topic at hand.

When I left, I hopped into a cab to get to the airport, I met a nice cab driver. He asked me which airline I was flying; then called Southwest “the Greyhound of the skies.” We kept our conversation going about cabs and I asked him about labor laws regarding cab drivers. Haven’t you ever thought of whether cabbies are in a union or wonder how many hours they have to work in a shift? Well, I found out. My cabbie belonged to one of the biggest cab companies (which owned a number of ‘brands’), and the drivers DO belong to a Teamsters union. He also told me that they worked 10-12 hour shifts, depending on seniority. See? The things you learn from a ride with a stranger.

Anyway, I hopped on the plane and we were off for home. As I settled in, I realized, he was right. Southwest democratized flying. For the first time (?), regular joes could afford to fly. Southwest’s fares were lower and that allowed for more people to take to the skies. This thought brought it back to my flight. Even though this was a work trip, I know it’s a privilege for me to be able to take a flight at anytime to another city. Not everyone is able to do that. Not everyone can afford the low airfare. While Southwest (and JetBlue) have been able to cut ticket prices, there is still a subsection of people who will never be able to afford to fly.

The fact that I can get from one place to another in a matter of hours is amazing. For that, I am very appreciative of what I have and what I can afford. In this case, flying and taking trips.
