Mother’s Day Gifts That Don’t Suck from Modcloth

This year marks my second Mother’s Day. That’s right, suckas, I’m someone’s mother. That is a very sobering thought, isn’t it? They’ll let anyone have a child. *zing!*

I dug around Modcloth and compiled a list of gift items that may work for the nursing mom-friend near you. Or if you’re a nursing mom and have come into some money (tax return? yay!), here are a few things you might like for yourself. One of the reasons why I like Modcloth is the real-people photos that are submitted to the website. You see what the clothes actually look like on normal-sized people.

Summer is coming and if you’re like me, you’re chasing after a tiny human with stubby legs and funky balance. A couple of new moms I know own these Saltwater Sandals in brown and they really like them. Red is a great neutral for summer. If you’re not a color adventurer, brown or even white works too.

One day I’d like to visit Dollywood. I mean, it’s a MF theme park on Dolly Parton. Who wouldn’t want to go there? For now, the t-shirt will have to suffice.

Then there’s my favorite dress I’ve purchased from Modcloth – Feeling Serene. I have this in blue, but I know some moms are partial to black for its slimming effect. I’m bringing my dress out to trot next week for Mom 2.0 Summit. It’s pretty, covers a ton of chubs and I can still pull a side down to nurse Toddler Spawn. (That’s right, we are still nursing at 21 months. I have power boobs. Pew pew!)

When in doubt, gift a scarf. They’re so versatile. She can add it to her fancy work outfit or throw it on with a white tank top. It’s also a great emergency nursing cover, if you need one. I’m so tired that I don’t care. Plus it’s the law. I whip my boob back and forth, I whip my boob back and forth.

 

Since I’ve got blogger conferences on the brain, I’m always in search of great paper notebooks. This one looks like it’ll do the trick. I don’t like hard spines because you can’t bend them, so spiral-bound notebooks are usually in my shopping cart. This gold and white striped one seems simple and elegant enough. Plus with a toddler who takes all my stuff, I tend to have several notebooks as spares.

As you may know, I’m a watch person, and I am not the only one. I stopped wearing a watch during the first year of Spawn’s life because I was afraid I would scratch her head with my metal bands. This little gold bee watch is perfect because it’s got a small leather band as opposed to metal.

Speaking of white sandals…. There’s been a resurgence of Birkenstocks, thanks to fashion bloggers. I’ve got two pairs myself and eyeing a third. They’re comfy and easy to break in. I didn’t think I’d ever wear a pair of Birks past my twenties, but..

 Breezy tops are great for new moms – they are easy to unbutton to nurse a baby and they hide the postpartum chubs. You can also belt it. You can pair it with jeans or leggings. All good options for new and newish moms.

During my first year as a mom, I threw my wallet in a diaper bag and that was it. Now I throw a small purse or clutch in the diaper bag, in case I need I _can_ leave the diaper bag in the car. I also have been looking for a smaller bag to throw into my laptop backpack for the same reason. This cute cat bag may do the trick.

Bonus: If you’re out of the nursing stage, that means you can wear necklaces without the fear of being choked by your own spawn (no pun intended)! So, here’s my bonus recommendation for moms who don’t have nursing kids – a delicate necklace for the spring!

I’m sure there are a few others gift ideas floating around but these are my picks.
