How fun is this?! The team over at Sterling Publishing sent this recipe book, Momosas by Paul Knorr, over to check out and try.
Momosas – Non-Alcoholic Drink Recipes
While the book is targeted towards pregnant women, this caught my eye because breastfeeding moms also need non-alcoholic drink ideas. Sure, you can pump and dump, but seriously, breast milk is LIQUID GOLD. So why would I waste it? No, friends, I’d rather not drink alcohol for the duration of my breastfeeding journey with Baby Spawn than pump and dump. (Plus I’m not a big drinker anyway… though I could have used a few beers, vodka sodas and Moscow Mules during the first week of postpartum.)
What I Liked About the Book
I use our Vitamix and Nutribullet regularly, so I’ve got stuff like acai powder and cacao nibs. Thankfully for you, dear reader, you do not need those superfood ingredients. Just good ol’ fruit, juices, fizzy water, and such.
Simple ingredients. I liked that the book listed the ingredients are mostly fresh fruit and fruit juices. Note: If you’ve got gestational diabetes, it’s probably best that you don’t try any of these drinks. I should know.
Easy recipes to follow. The Baby’s Kick consists of grape juice, cranberry juice and club soda. BOOM. How easy is that!??
You don’t have to be pregnant to enjoy! In fact, there’s a whole section of party drinks titled Sangrias. These easy to mix recipes would be great for parties and entertaining. You don’t have to go with the old school 7-Up and Sherbert punch bowl. You can punch it up (pun intended) with the Rock-A-Bye-Baby: 1 part lemonade + 1 part white cranberry juice + 1 part ginger beer. Bam.
What I Didn’t Like About the Book
My two issues have to do with the technical part of the book, not the recipes.
Lack of Serving Size Info. Each recipe doesn’t tell you what the serving size is, so you don’t know if it serves one person or two. Some of the recipes calls for “parts,” which allows you to control how much you want in a glass. Other recipes will list ounces or cups. My assumption is that each recipe (except the Sangrias section) is good for one person, but it would be great to know exactly how much each recipe yields.
The index. Yeah, it has nothing to do with the recipes themselves. The index doesn’t categorize the drinks by ingredients, and I think it would have been great to have a second index by ingredients.
The Verdict
Buy or Borrow? Depends on budget and whether you want a new drink! It’s under $10 which is a pretty good price.
This would be a terrific gift for expectant parents or new moms. I’m sorry but liquid gold is not to be pumped and dumped. The book is colorful and small, which would also be fantastic for someone who isn’t a drinker. The holidays are coming soon. Here’s your stocking stuffer!
Let me know in the comments what your favorite non-alcoholic drink is!
