Friday Five 12.6.13: WMMH – Benedict Cumberbatch, Beyonce in LA

I haven’t been feeling well, and the weather is so freaking cold that I am just miserable. I told ya. Seasonal affective disorder. What is going on with Jimmy Kimmel lately? He’s got some great videos up and I find myself clicking on them. Let’s go straight to…

What’s making me happy this week:

5. Benedict Cumberbatch recites R.Kelly’s lyrics to “Genius” – I think it’s the juxtaposition of a proper Brit against rap lyrics. Or R.Kelly’s. For god’s sake. Video: http://youtu.be/sNPp74zh8lM.

4. Dance battle between Kid and Pistons usher, Part II! I loved the first video. I love this video just as much!

3. Growing up, watching the original “The Sound of Music” with Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer. I think we all scratched our heads and wondered how “The Sound of Music Live” with Carrie Underwood and Bill Compton ever came to light. A million other Tweeters felt the same way. You can search different hashtags like #soundofmusic, #soundofmusiclive, #thesoundofmusiclive… This cracks me up. I really was waiting for Bill to say “SUCKAY!” Alas, I changed the channel after the Von Trapp children showed up. I’m sure all the supporting characters sang beautifully. They’re all from Broadway, right? Then props to them. But Jesus, they do not know how to act for TV. SUBTLE facial expressions win on film, yo. I think they’ve all followed Lea Michele’s school of acting.

The original movie makes me happy. You can’t beat it. It’s like trying to remake “Singin’ in the Rain.” (Who would be that stupid? Oh, wait… ) I’m happy I’m so damn old that I saw the Julie Andrews version first and know it as the original and THE BEST and ONLY version to watch for my future/hypothetical childrenz.

2. I was going through some photos and this made me happy. A few weeks ago, one of my best friends came to LA for a visit for her birthday. We took her to see the Space Shuttle Endeavour. It was my second time and it is no less magnificent. It’s so so powerful to see the shuttle in person. Can you imagine this shuttle being in space for so many trips?! It held human beings inside. In space. In case you were wondering, tickets are free (plus $2 service charge). Go now if  you haven’t. That 6-minute video on how they moved the Shuttle from LAX to the California Science Center always makes me tear up. I’m such a sap these days.

1. BEYONCE!

As much as I like to give sh*t to The Wife for drooling over Queen Bey, she is damn amazing. We’ve seen her before and she puts on a stupendous show. STUPENDOUS! We had floor tickets, and I was able to get pretty close to the stage – about 25 deep! I love love love that she’s employed all women dancers (except for her Le Twins) and all woman band. I love it. +10000 points for that. It’s rare to see so many professional musicians who happen to be women on a balls-out international tour. For that, Beyonce has made me a fan for life.

Also, I am loving the way many shows we’ve gone to, the artists have a secondary stage in the back of the arena. I like that they use as much real estate as they can.

Beyonce made my week. Hands down.

One of these days I’ll see Beyonce. I’m floored by her talent and ticked off that I no longer live in Brooklyn. One of my mom-friends seems to hang out with her in the park on a regular basis.

So bummed I didn’t make it to Beyonce. They gave away tix at work and it was like a massive epic panic to try and get some. Looks AMAZING! Love that we both cited Benedict and the SOML bad acting. Great minds…
