Friday Five 5.3.13 – Coffee Mugs for Book Nerds

I’m only two books away from completing my goal of 50 books in 2013, and it’s only May. I’m totally patting myself on the back for that. This got me thinking about the local libraries that I visit. Almost each branch has a monthly book sale where you can buy used books for 50-cents or $1.00. Quite a bargain if you like books.

One of my favorite libraries, LA’s Central Library, is also home to the LAPL Library Store. That got me interested in looking at what other cities’ library stores offered to their patrons and passersby. There weren’t many stores, so I checked out Etsy.

Since my days don’t start without a cup of joe, I ran a search on book-themed coffee mugs. Here are five cool booknerd mugs I’ve found online:

This is a repeat gift item I’ve posted before – Reading is Sexy mug - $14. I think it’s perfect for me and I may just pick it up the next time I’m at the Library. Coffee and books – what’s not to love?

(Buy Olympia is selling it for $12.)

In our country, we still have crazy people who think books should be banned… in schools. I remember when Harry Potter made it to the list and I thought, “Are you people crazy?” I found this Read Banned Books mug at the ALA store – $14.

But wait, there’s more. Here’s another Banned Books mug – $13 – that lists some of the titles. I found this off the Philosopher’s Guild website.

I don’t know anyone who doesn’t like Jane Austen. One of my favorite books by Jane Austen is Pride and Prejudice. (Download a copy for your Kindle for FREE!) My favorite on-screen version is a tie between the 1940 movie starring Greer Garson and the A&E miniseries starring *drool* Colin Firth. Etsy store owner Bohemia’s Looking Glass offers a “I’d Rather Be At Pemberly” coffee mug – $13.

This pretty much sums up my life. There are many variations of “Eat Sleep Read” but here’s one of my favorite iterations. Malaprop’s Bookstore in North Carolina sells this “Eat Sleep Read” mug – $14.

Which mug is your favorite? Do you have another book-related mug that I should add to this list?

Happy Friday! Grab your favorite bookworm a mug and enjoy the weekend!

Friday Five 4.12.13 – Put It On The List

These days, office organization, tasks, family obligations, events, kids’ parties, and the like are put into a calendar or some sort of list. Moms have their color-coded pens and calendars. My friends use their smartphones to add to their To Do Lists. I’ve seen my colleagues write each task on Post-Its. Me? I learned to create paper and e-lists to fit my work and schedule. I have a ton of notebooks and a running Word document for particular projects. When I was in corporate land, I used both. The big Word doc was to keep me in check with senior staff, and to show where my priority projects lay. I separated everything from high, medium, and low/recurring priorities. In my notebook, I would jot down the day’s To Do’s in the morning and get going.

For me, everything has been a bit jumbled lately. Depending on the client and the day’s work, I’ll jot things down on Notepad (.txt), which doesn’t have color-coding or easy bolding capabilities. I’ve since realized I can’t work like that. I’m going back to my paper notebook and Word lists. It makes the most sense and is the easiest for me to work with. For you, it may be different.

Today’s Friday Five are my top 5 To Dos in the very near future, like today or over the weekend:

  1. Buy my ticket to the NAWBOLA annual awards luncheon. Goal: networking and seeking out potential clients
  2. Blog blurb about SMCLA‘s upcoming Social Media for Social Good event on Wed 4/17 – y’all are invited! Goal: increase number of attendees and visibility of SMCLA
  3. Add media mentions and links to the blog. Goal: Show off.
  4. Outline a “Welcome, new members” Google Hangout plan for new SMCLA members. Goal: Welcoming new members.
  5. Start and finish “House Rules” by Chloe Neill, the latest book in the series. Goal: Finish book #41 of 50 in 2013, and stop obsessing about Merit and Ethan since that’s the last one for now until the 8th books comes out.

What are your Friday Five To Dos?

Friday Five: 3.22.13 – The Power of Network

I’ve been building up and working on my new business and what’s been keeping me going has been the strength and loyalty of my network of friends and colleagues. This past week, I attended the SMCLA event on B2B and social media, and my fellow board members came up to me and asked how I was doing and how they could help with my business. It threw me back for a second. It finally occurred to me that my network is strong and not full of superficial types. Sure there are those in the periphery, but the core remains strong and caring. The network of my network is strong and while this sounds so hippie-ish, it’s true – they have my back, and I’m lucky.

For my Friday Five, here are the lessons of the week:

1. It is OK to take time off and read books.

2. It is OK to take more time off and read more books.

3. Your mind and body need to remove itself from trauma and exhaustion.

4. When you are generous with your time and friendship, your circle is generous with their time and friendship.

5. It is OK to take time off.

Friday Five: 9.21.12 – Stop Exhaling in My Face

This week’s five is brought to you by the letters W.T.F. One of my biggest pet peeves is when someone exhales their germy breath in my face. This usually gets me sick 99% of the time. The other 1% is usually from travel. I have a feeling that people don’t notice that they are mouth-breathers and/or literally exhaling INTO my face.

I do my best not to breathe in when they breathe out, but sometimes you can’t help it. You get caught in that mid-exhale/mid-inhale situation. What do you do? Do you hold your breath midway through inhaling, look away and exhale, and then breathe in ‘fresh’ air? (The answer is yes.)

Anyway, this week’s Friday Five is dedicated to you mouth breathers who blow your germs in my face.

1. Currently reading The Traitor in the Tunnel by YS Lee. It’s the third in the series. It’s a neat premise I haven’t read before – young woman as a spy in Victorian-era London with a secret MI-6-like agency disguised as a girls school. The book covers are great. If you go to YS Lee’s blog, do a search on when she was at her first book cover shoot. So interesting to see the process! The first book is on sale for Kindle $2.99! Go get it!

2. I’m in love with my new flat iron by BaByliss Pro. It’s got different heat settings; I’m currently using 340-degrees. My hair gets nice and straight and NOT frizzy. If you have Asian hair, you know what I’m talkin’ about. I heart it. But their social media program Facebook presence is horrendous.

3. To the men and women in my office who don’t wash their hands after using the restroom and grabbing the door to leave, I dislike you very much.

4. Birthday wishlists. The Wife was contacted by friends for my wishlist. I don’t really have one. Last week’s five was pretty much fulfilled. I’ve got everything I need for now. I want a Vitamix or a juicer, but we have no counter space for it. Does that count?

5. Essie. My beloved Turquiose and Caicos bottle has turned dark. It’s not a bright nail color anymore. I’d only had it for a year. I emailed Essie customer service and asked them for an exchange. Maybe that had a newer lot of polish I could swap my polish for. They sent me a refund check of $8 to buy a new bottle. And that is how you do customer service. This is a nail polish company who gets it. (RE: Social media – I’m surprised they haven’t engaged on Twitter.)

Essie customer service gets a high-five from me.

There you have it. Have a great weekend, and I hope you never get breathed on.
