Book review: The Good, The Bad, and The Undead

Hmmm. I’m half-embarrassed to admit that I read this… But, as you know, I’m a sucker for serials.

This was book #2/50.

The Good, the Bad, and the Undead by Kim Harrison

Here’s the second book in a series – The Good, the Bad, and the Undead by Kim Harrison. I did a quick review on Word, and some of it is coming back to me. Rachel Morgan is the main character. She’s an earth witch whose partner is a living vampire. It’s a definite improvement from the first book, which I thought was crappy. I think I gave that a C. (I didn’t write a book review for the first one, but I kept notes.) The book covers also don’t help.

Rachel is pretty stupid for a witch and a rockstar runner. A runner in this world means she’s like an FBI/NSA agent. The story moves kind of slow, but at least it moves. She’s tracking this rich politician-type Trent, trying to tag him. Ivy, her business partner, struggles with not eating humans, Rachel included. Jenks, their other business partner, is probably the best supporting character in this book. He’s a pixie – cool, huh? – and he’s the voice of reason and comic relief. I like how Harrison has all these characters interweaved.

The mystery that was in the first book ends in this second book. There’s more magic, politics, and complexity in this book, but by the end, I was afraid I knew how the series was going to end – here was my prediction: Rachel and Trent get together. I stand by it. I can still see it happening.

Grade: B-

I just finished the third book, and while it takes you in a different direction, I can see my prediction still coming true.

Oh, and I really don’t appreciate Harrison describing Ivy as oriental. Gah, racist much?
