One of the things I don’t care for when traveling to Las Vegas are the hotel gyms. They’re boring, and they remind me that I’m trapped… in a closet. I knew I was headed to Vegas for my birthday and wanted to stay in shape post-half marathon, so I did some digging on fun workouts and experiences to keep in shape.
Well, the fantastic PR team at The Mirage invited me to practice yoga among the dolphins – how could I say no??
Now I haven’t practiced yoga in a while. But that’s ok. You don’t have to be a hipster yogi from Silverlake or Brooklyn to enjoy this class!
My friend and I checked in at The Mirage spa and salon early on a Friday morning. You should get there about a 1/2 hour before the 8:30am start time. We changed into our gear and stored our stuff in the lockers provided. Staff brought over coffee and tea, and there is a tray of snacks if you’d like to munch before yoga-ing. (Note: Out of respect for the class, I took photos with my iPhone 5 as discreetly as possible.)
The reception staff gave us a tour of the spa – there are four jacuzzis with different temperatures – two hot, one warm, one cool! It’s like the Goldilocks of jacuzzis! There is a giant washroom where you can fix your hair and do your make-up as well as large showers for post-workouts.
When 8:30am came around, Laura, our yoga instructor, greeted each of us and led us out from the spa/salon to the Dolphin Habitat. We walked through the entrance of the Habitat, greeted the dolphins and headed into the viewing room, which is underwater. Squee!
As we walked, Laura gave us a short intro on the program and about the dolphins. There are a few rescue dolphins and a couple of them that were born there. I found it interesting that marine biology research nerds came to The Mirage to study them.
The mats, water, towels, and blocks were already set up for us. I LOVE this. I really like when I don’t need to bring bangles and widgets to work out when traveling. (I already bring running shoes and gear that take up too much space in my bag.) There were seven of us, which was a good size for the room we were in.
About the room… this is the observation room at the habitat. It’s not fancy, just a carpeted room with large windows with views of the dolphins swimming along.
We got started. In case you thought this yoga class was floofy, it wasn’t. It was flowy like vinyasa, so don’t think you’re going to get breaks. I was sweating by the time we finished.
There were a couple of times when we were balancing on one leg (tree), the dolphins caught my eye. (Truth? I kept looking for them because they were so close and mesmerizing to me.) They swam behind Laura, and I lost my concentration and stumbled onto my mat. I’m sure Laura gets that all the time! How can you not grin at these guys?
There’s something to be said about doing yoga in this space. Laura mentioned that when she began teaching yoga in the space, students are more sensitive and peaceful. She mentioned something about oxytocin; the body releases oxytocin, which triggers feelings of happiness and relief. Maybe it was a placebo effect, or maybe it’s just that you’re doing yoga near dolphins, but I felt fantastic and full of glee.
Our yoga session wouldn’t be complete without a picture with the instructor! Laura has been teaching yoga here for about two years now. Chances are, if you’ve booked a session, you’ll have Laura as your teacher!
I can’t tell you how much I enjoyed yoga among the dolphins. This is something that I think anyone can enjoy and participate. You don’t have to be a skinny minnie nor do you have to be a yogi to practice here.
Another bonus? You have an all-day all-access pass to The Mirage’s Spa & Salon. You bet I took advantage of the jacuzzi. I sat there until I got pruney. Then I showered and did my hair and face with their products – Moroccan Oil products. PS – this is one of the best ways to get me to buy new hair products. I am now obsessed with the finishing spray!

Grateful thanks to The Mirage PR team, allowing me to practice yoga in one of the most unique settings ever.
As the holidays are coming, this experience would be a perfect gift for anyone. Wife, if you are reading this, I would like to do this AGAIN! Someone gift me another session, please!
Disclosure: Yoga session was hosted. All positive feels, squees, and opinions are honest and all mine.
