Book Reviews: Fallen and Torment

Er… so we go from porn and Chuck Palahniuk, back to young adult. I borrowed Fallen by Lauren Kate from the library, and I bought it for my Kindle. I also bought Torment (book 2) for my Kindle. What was I thinking??

WARNING!!!! SPOILERS BELOW. I’m not even going to bother to hide the spoilers. I do not recommend either book.

Fallen by Lauren Kate - bk#1/3

I found Fallen to be interesting to a certain extent. This wasn’t about vampires, thank goodness. Instead, this was about angels – good and bad.  It kind of reminded me of Twilight, where the girl just falls in love with the boy, without any reason. I guess that is ok and understandable as teenagers do that. I know I did. I had obnxiously dumb crushes on people (NKTOB anyone?).

In this first book, Luce transfers to a reform school after a boy is killed (and the public thinks it was her fault). In this reform school, she meets Daniel, Cam, and some other people. There’s this whole thing about her that everyone knows except for her. Daniel keeps her at arm’s length, telling her they shouldn’t be together. (Sound familiar? This leaves me to the conclusion that men are stupid AND authors think this is the correct way to go about “hiding the truth.” What.a.crock.)

Torment by Lauren Kate - bk #2/3

In the second book, Torment, it’s spelled out. Here, I’ll spoil it for  you – Daniel is a fallen angel. He fell in love with Luce, a mortal. Right at the moment she loves him, she spontaneously combusts. This happens pretty much every 17 years – Luce gets reincarnated and Daniel gets re-tortured, seeing her die again and again. What a great concept, right? I mean, you could do so much. But instead, Luce is now in ANOTHER school and Daniel and Cam are running around trying to kill off otherworldly creatures trying to kill Luce. Eh. You know, it would be easier to protect Luce if you told her what was going on. Then she’d be on her guard too. Duh. This second book also felt like total filler, waiting for the final countdown.

Hahahahaa. Seriously, this song is perfect for a lot of things.

I was hoping that Luce, the main character, was going to grow a uterus and start crackin’ skulls. Instead she sort of lays about and wallows.. she wallows a lot in the second book. She kind of reminded me of Bella of Twilight and Lee of Prep. You just want to shake her for her dumb decisions.

Torment was a torment to read. While I’m a serial reader, I will not buy the third book. I’m not sure I’ll finish this series. It’s pretty much on my sh#tlist.

Ok, saving grace? The covers!! Check out how pretty the book covers are. If there is anything that was redeemable in this series, it’s the cover art.
