WIRI: Sanctuary

This has been a post I’ve procrastinated on. Before my marathon Torchwood-streaming, I started to streaming SANCTUARY on Netflix. When it first premiered on SyFy, I tried to keep up. I failed. I believe I was in grad school and my classes were in the evening. I also didn’t have a DVR. Still don’t.

Sanctuary- Season 1

I’m a fan of Robin Dunne. He’s like a regular joe who happens to act. It’s funny how he shows up in random shows that I used to watch: Dead Like Me; Dawson’s Creek; Avonlea (!); CSI…He’s great in this show. In the first season, he’s us (the audience), trying to get a grip and wrap his head around the Sanctuary. Two things I think the show should do for him: stop highlighting his hair – dark brown suits him, and stop dressing him with Ed Hardy pieces. (Yeah they’re probably not Ed Hardy but they’re that type of clothing. Gross.)

The actor who plays Dr. Helen Magnus is fantastic. I kept staring at her on the screen, trying to figure out where I “knew” her from. Duh. She’s Sam Carter from Stargate!

Turn the nerd alert siren on. Really.

Sanctuary - Season 2

I enjoyed most of Seasons 1 and 2. Spoiler: I miss Magnus’s daughter, Ashley. She was badass and I think she was agreat addition to balance out the cast.

Some of the episodes were better than others. Some episodes were pretty weak. There were a couple of eps in S1 that were pretty dumb. In S2, there was a Bollywood-ish episode which I thought was not necessary. While I can see the forward movement it took S2, it made me feel like the show was exoticizing Bollywood and India. Otherwise, a pretty good show.

For a Syfy show, it’s some quality tv. This definitely feels like Canadian tv with its production value. I don’t think it would survive on regular non-cable tv. There’s too much lore and it asks you to use more than two braincells… In addition, Battlestar set the bar really high for any Syfy show, and any show for that matter. Maybe Torchwood, but that’s BBC.

Syfy signed Sanctuary to a fourth season – Yay!

I’m all caught up now, and I’m just waiting for Season 3 to end so I can Netflix it or watch it on-demand.
